Super Smash Bros Brawl supports online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection worldwide. If you connect your Wii to the internet, you can enjoy linked battles with people far away, according to the game’s director Masahiro Sakurai. He apologizes in advance to people playing online multiplayer against each other from long distances (like between Japan and America) because those people could have a slower battle because of internet lag.
Online multiplayer “With Friends”:
Wii friends who have registered one another’s names can play together freely. If you’re registered as friends, you can check each other’s status. If a friend is online and you earn his or her consent, you can enter a battle. You can change your icon and even send short messages during brawls! These short messages are entered in advance, and you send them by taunting. There are four messages for the four directions on the + Control Pad: Up, down, left and right. — With friends, you can brawl any way you like. And there are other modes besides just free-for-alls.
Online multiplayer “With Anyone”:
You can also battle with people you don’t know who are looking for brawls. The most important point here is that you will not know each other’s names. Your opponent will not know your name or any information about you, and neither of you can send short messages. There will also be no battle records kept for this mode, so whether you win or lose, it doesn’t matter. Just sit back and play. — Now, while you’re waiting for a match to start, you can kill time with a little practice on Sandbag.
There are actually a number of other online play modes planned, but those will be revealed gradually when the new modes are announced before launch.

OMG YES!!!!!!!!!!! Freakin’ finally.
This totally makes my day! I think the entirety of Nintendome has breathed a collective sigh of relief! And I think Nintendo has just secured the fact that they are finally serious about online, this was their biggest test as far as I’m concerned, Smash HAD to be online, and now they’ve done it!
It’s official, I will finally be able to play Supa! HURRAY!

Ok I know I should be happy… but really can you imagine this game not having online in this generation? With Pokemon having it… on even DS and this one not?
If this game would have come out and not have it a hail of bricks would have flown past Reggie´s head. I´m glad they´re ot going mediocre on the multiplayer but it was quite obvious.
The game will no doubtly be very cool. You all think maybe they´ll go with online transactions and sell characters a la Marvel Ultimate Alliance on X360? Could be intresting to see what the gamers would think… will they be offended or bend over like many X360 users.
I´m not against online transactions but letting them go to far (aka Guitar Hero 2-X360) would send a huge presedent that Nintendo Wii users will take it straight up and hard as long as it comes from Nintendo.
Hope that my grim tesis never comes true.

Well Minda8, they aren’t done announcing new characters for 2 to 3 more months, so who knows.
Besides hearing it has online multiplayer is the best news I’ve heard so far from the official site!
