Playstation 3 SIXAXIS rumble is here at last! At least, according to reports claiming that the latest official software development kits for the PS3 support force feedback technology.
And now speculation is running rampant that Sony has already unveiled the force-feedback version of the SIXAXIS to developers, and that the new controller will be shown for the first time at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, which starts in a matter of days.
This unveiling seems highly likely (that they’d reveal the new controller at TGS) seeing as how Sony has, if the reports are true, already showed developers the controller. It’d definitely draw more thunder to Sony if they make this announcement, something that gamers have been griping about since the SIXAXIS was revealed, as it is the only current-gen controller that does not have rumble support. But even if they don’t reveal the new controller at TGS, rumble support in PS3 games IS coming, reports Prog. Definitely a good thing to hear for PS3 fans.
The lack of SIXAXIS rumble support, you may remember, came due to a lawsuit between Sony and Immersion, a company that claimed Sony broke copyright laws in their use of the force feedback technology, and Immersion won against Sony in court. Microsoft however paid Immersion for the technology and subsequently used it in the Xbox 360 so their gamers would have rumble. Sony would not bow to Immersion however and thus they went ahead on the SIXAXIS without adding rumble support (initially claiming that it was impossible to have rumble and their motion technology at the same time). Thankfully for us though, Sony and Immersion finally did kiss and make-up (and exchange mullah) and so finally, a year after the PS3’s release, we will apparently have rumble once again.
But what do you think, is force feedback really a necessary component of modern video games?
HOORAY!… NOT REALLY.
