TurboGrafx CD and TurboDuo games coming to Wii Virtual Console!
Talk about a whole lot of Wii Virtual Console news! Not only was it announced that the Wii Virtual Console will be getting NeoGeo games, as well as Europeans getting a whole host of American and Japanese titles never released in their part of the world before, now it has been revealed that the Wii Virtual Console will be getting TurboGrafx CD and TurboDuo games starting in October 2007! Ten or more titles will be out in 2007, with 5 more planned for 2008.
The games will cost 800 Wii Points (that’s $8 or €8) and will be available in all regions! Among the first games available will be Ys Book I & II (often considered the killer-app for the system) and Chou Aniki. On average the games filesizes are between 50MB and 400MB, while the Wii’s internal memory is 512MB, so let’s hope Nintendo release an external hard disk soon. It would be nice to have one that looks and functions like a vertical stand (but with a cord for the hard disk to plugin to the USB port in the back of the Wii).
For those that don’t know, the TurboGrafx CD from 1989 was the first US game console to play CD-ROMs, it was an add on for the TurboGrafx-16. The system though was eventually crushed by the more popular Sega CD.
Popular games for the TurboGrafx CD include: Dracula X: Rondo of the Blood (Castlevania), Ranma 1/2, Ys III & IV, Macross 2036, Neo Nectaris, Monster Lair, Baby Joe, Beyond Shadowgate, Lords of Thunder and Download II.
As for NEC and Hudson’s co-developed TurboDuo from 1992, it’s said that it’s essentially a combination of TurboGrafx-16 and TurboGrafx-CD hardware, with an upgraded BIOS and extra RAM. But it had mostly the same games.
Thanks to Luke for translating Gamewatch‘s Japanese.
