Unreal Tournament III on PS3 to offer keyboard & mouse support
Console gamers who are fans of the classic PC style keyboard and mouse first-person shooter controls REJOICE! Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, has confirmed on their message boards that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournmanet III will include support for mouse-and-keyboard controls!
This is a first for PS3 games. While the system itself allows for the hookup of mouse and keyboard for functions like chatting or web-browsing, there has yet to be a game that actually supported the use of mouse and keyboard for in-game control of your character. That all changes with this announcement, and hopefully more FPS titles on PS3 will offer this support, which is preferred by many hardcore FPS players.
Mark Rein went on to say, “Steve Polge [programmer] is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling ‘gimped’ for either side. We’ll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not.”
Unreal Tournament 3, as revealed at E3 2007, will be coming to both the PC and PS3 this year (an Xbox 360 version is scheduled for 2008). It will allow for cross-platform gameplay between the PS3 and PC platforms, and the above announcement of mouse-and-keyboard support on PS3 should greatly enhance this feature. This also means that some PC players may prefer to just buy the PS3 version instead of upgrading their PC’s to play Unreal Tournament III.
Regarding the Xbox 360 version and whether it too will support mouse-and-keyboard controls, he stated, “Nothing new to report about 360, sorry. As soon as we have a better idea on 360 release time-frame and features we’ll announce it but don’t expect any news on it before the end of this year.”
