Shenmue Online cancelled, Shenmue 3 not happening as Sega’s franchise dies

Back in February 2006, Shenmue creator and veteran game designer Yu Suzuki, confirmed that the mysterious Shenmue MMO venture Shenmue Online (that was announced in 2004) was still in development: “The story will be finished through games.” Later that year at the China Joy 2006 game event Sega unveiled new info in an Shenmue Online trailer and gameplay videos that you can watch below.

Sadly that’s the last we’ll see of any Shenmue games, since Shenmue Online has been canceled and will more than likely never see another sequel like Shenmue 3. Seganerds reports that ever since the game didn’t show up at China Joy 2007 it’s continued development has been questioned.

It’s now been confirmed by Kikizo staff saying: “As for Shenmue, I would have to say at this stage, it is worth forgetting about. If all the fans get any rich relatives together and channel it though Dojo perhaps we could buy rights, hire Suzuki (he’d likely say yes) and independently make the game under license from Sega at no risk to them. That is the only way it will get made at this stage I think.”

The following words must’ve been really hard for the Shenmue fans to say: “To clarify, what I meant was I wanted to get clarification on something I heard a couple of days ago, which is that yes, Shenmue Online is f*cked and Suzuki’s status is, once again, up in the air, which counts Shenmue III totally out of the picture right now. This is confirmed, it seems.”

Wow double-sad news! Now I have to go tell some friends who are fans of Shenmue and Shenmue II.

I was just bord and looked at the game book and was reading it all over again and thought id come on the net to see if any news will be about shenmue 3 for the 360 after reading all this lol i had my hopes up but now not too sure i got the game it was on sale the momment i saw the cover and read the back of the game i said im going to get this game i got the game and played it and watched the shenmue 1 dvd like 5 times lol played the game and finished it when it finished the ending i was shocked i thoght he was ganna find lan di and kill him since ryo came soo close to catch him soo many times i finsihed the game and as soon as it was done i called EB games to see if a part 3 was going to ome out the guy told me the game has been out for a while and its news has died downand that he would be suprised if a 3d game came out and he said hes sorry but he cant tell me any thing about the game, i went on the net and searched for it and i saw alot of things even a time line that said shenmue is ganna go up to shenmue 5 i may be wrong i may not be but after seeing these vids i say its a shame if they dont release it just give it up and give us tha game all the fans that are left still im sure will buy the game at any cost if it is to be released its sad news and kinda retarded to make 2 chapers and say f**K you all for the 3d cuz we didnt make money that we wanted so we the fans have to beg and ask when its ganna be out GREEDY f**kers

Please, this can’t be real. We all want Shenmue and everybody knows that’s the best history game in all history. Do something we need Shenmue 3 for xbox360 and this isn’t a joke i’m sure there are lots of people, more than any other history game, who really want’s this game. Think about the customers for once and don’t end this story like this.

I THINK THIS IS G*Y BECAUSE I BEEN A FAN FOR YEARS AND NOW KNOWING THAT THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE A SHENMUE 3…GETS ME MAD BECAUSE I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXTS AND I THINK EVERYONE DOES TOO!
