Last week Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima announced Metal Gear Online is in the works for PS3, and this week he explained how it works:

Metal Gear Online is headed to PS3! Featuring characters, stages, and the same control scheme as found in the upcoming PS3 game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This reloaded Metal Gear Online experience packs in the additional environments, game modes, and team-based multiplayer mayhem to make this the ultimate online companion to Metal Gear Solid 4.”

Konami adds that “The new game showcases the all-new proprietary SOP system: a cornerstone gameplay mechanic that encourages players to link together with teammates’ nanomachines to build a matrix of real-time information that includes compatriots’ whereabouts, battle condition, and location of nearest enemy.”

At Konami’s Metal Gear 20th anniversary party in Japan yesterday the game’s producer Mr. Matsuhara said the theme is “Hide and Seek.” The screenshot above shows a multiplayer game played in two teams, one red, one blue, and you can recognize your team with the body heat scanner’s colored outline display. Aside from that 6 x 6 mode, you’ve also got a Versus mode where you can switch between first- and third-person view.

Closed Beta Testing in Japan begins on August 20th and ends on September 3rd, limited to 3,000 people.
