3 million Wii and 1 million PS3 consoles sold in Japan

Nintendo has sold over 3 million Wii consoles in Japan, three times the sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 which this week surpassed the 1 million sales in the country, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said.

Sales of the Wii since its debut in Japan on December 2nd 2006 totaled 3.01 million units as of July 15th, compared with 1.01 million units for the PlayStation 3, which hit Japanese store shelves on November 11th 2006, meaning it took Sony four times as long to get to a million compared to Nintendo. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 is still stuck at 420,705 consoles sold since December 10th 2005.

Nintendo has so far seen strong demand for the Wii, helped by its affordable price and motion-sensing controller, which enables users to direct on-screen action by swinging it like a racket or sword. The Wii sells for 25,000 yen ($205) in Japan, half the price of the basic version of the PS3 in the country. The PS3 is off to a slow start this generation due to its high price and scarcity of strong game titles.

Enterbrain also reported on sales of the popular Nintendo DS handheld reached 18 million units in Japan as of July 15th. The DS has been on sale in Japan since December 2004, reports Reuters.

… The last part of that sentence makes zero sense. “Them” who? And “four times as long” to do what?

Sorry about that Kabapu, sometimes I add a last minute thought before publishing and forget to re-read it. I meant to say it took Sony four times as long to get to a million compared to Nintendo.
