DS gets new coloring book game called Paint By DS, will be out in Europe on August 24, US release in fourth quarter

Paint by DS . . . that’s the name of the latest “game that’s not really a game” title for the Nintendo DS. And this time it’s coming from a European developer and not a Japanese one. I love all these zany “training” type games though, they are great ideas and I hope they keep them coming, which I’m sure they will due to the high sales of these types of quick and easy to grasp games.

Paint by DS is a digital coloring book aimed at non-traditional gamers which features artwork by some of the greatest artists of all time, including Hokusai, Cezanne and Van Gogh.

Kids and people of all ages will use the DS stylus to mix oil and water-based paints to create different colors across the spectrum and to make different consistencies. Once that’s done they can start coloring in and painting! There will be 15 coloring challenges and a series of mini-games themed around famous artworks.

In line with the “Zen Games” proposition of relaxing, non-violent and non-competitive games, Tomo Ohno, Chief Operating Officer of Ertain BV said: “This is the first of the Zen Series games and shows perfectly how the Nintendo DS can attract a different type of user. Paint by DS helps the player relax, and be artistic anywhere, anytime.”

The game, which includes patented technology, will be released on 24th August 2007, across Europe, priced at £19.99/€24.99. The US release date will follow in Q4 2007.

Two limited edition versions will also be available on launch, one with a paint set and one with a paint book.
