The top 10 MMOs is quite the diverse bunch of popular Massive Multiplayer Online Games. Take a look at the list:
1. World of Warcraft, released 2004 - 8.5 million subscribers.
2. Habbo Hotel, released 2000 - 7.5 million active users.
3. RuneScape, released 2001 - 5 million active users.
4. Club Penguin, released 2006 - 4 million active users.
5. Webkinz, released 2005 - 3.8 million active users.
6. Gaia Online, released 2003 - 2 million active users.
7. Guild Wars, released 2005 - 2 million active users.
8. Puzzle Pirates, released 2003 - 1.5 million active users.
9. Lineage I/II, released 1998 - 1 million subscribers.
10. Second Life, released 2003 - 500,000 active users.
Eh, this list is a bit of a joke. I’d hardly class most of these as MMOG’s. For a start Gaia is a forum, it’s not a game it’s a message board with the odd minigame tacked on. Secondly do free browser based games really count? Personally I’d rather see a list of the top 10 ACTUAL MMOG’s.
Wrecks, I think the key here is “lots of people playing a game together online”. The reason I liked this list is because it wasn’t all about pay-per-month games, but that still reached a high number of active users having fun.
PS: I’ve made a note of your comment to compose a MMOG or MMORPG top 10 sometime.
You kidding me right? Habbo and Gaia arnt even MMO’s nor is Second Life (which is a chat room with avatars)
And FFXI has over 550,000 where is it on this list? How about the 6-7 10 million user+ Korean MMOs out there?
This list is terrible, you should just delete it now. You guys have no clue what your talking about.
James, I don’t read Korean, do you? Can you give an official or reliable source for the FFXI number to show they are active users for months on end? That’s a big difference compared to just mentioning the number of registered players or how many played it once in the past year before leaving.
Also, instead of tearing my fragile ego down (seriously, I’m crying in a corner) why don’t you give constructive criticism and give a list of “your real top 10 MMOs” and their websites that show the number of subscribers/active members.
You got dug, prepare to realize just how bad this list sucks.
This is the suckiest list ever. Try actually listing some GAMES.
I’m pretty sure that Everquest, SWG, and LOTRO all can boast over 500,000 users.
if its not on this list its not a game and thus is NOT a MMOG
This took all ov 5 minutes to google and is the most accurate list on the internet aside from the companies internal numbers themselves despite being a year old. Update the numbers that need it and you will have a true and accurate picture of popular MMOs and not some half assed list like you got together
this list seperates out Asian market MMOGs which you can find on the side. As you can see there, they would all completely throw your list off since most asian MMOGs have more users than Western ones.
this list ALSO seperates out all but the true web based MMOs. About the only one you have listed that IS a MMO is Puzzle Pirates and RuneScape.
Lastly you combined two games (Lin 1 and 2) THEY ARE NOT THE SAME GAME. Saying they are is like saying Everquest I and II are the same, they are not.
@James:
While I don’t agree with the accuracy of the included list myself; I would not discount games not listed at MMOGChart.com as “non-games”. SirBruce has done a great job with the charts, but he has not updated them for 51 weeks. But Habbo has as much place on that list as WoW.
I personally have my doubts about Habbo having 7.5 million *active* users, after having visited each of their various localized sites and found only 6500 players online on the US site during what I would consider prime-time play for the age group it is targetted at (3-6pm).
If WoW has 8.5 million subs worldwide; 3 million subs in the US; and peaks with about 350,000 concurrent players in the US during prime time. I’d think Habbo would have a few more than 6500 players online at 3:30PM on a Friday.
Well sorry I was so negative before but the fact that Gaia is on there is just…. ugh.
i completely agree on this objection runescape and WoW are mmo(rpg if you like) but gaia? come on guys you can do better i bet kings of chaos could do better than that…at least check it out or send a list to my email *rkm4909@yahoo.com* say its for ajmartin2006
