Disney Interactive Studios to triple videogame spendings to $350 million by 2012

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End for PS2Disney-fan James sent in news that Walt Disney Co. will triple the amount of money it spends developing video games to benefit from strong growth expectations worldwide.

“We are ramping up our investment in video games…. It is a market where there is real opportunity,” said Thomas O. Staggs, Disney’s chief financial officer.

Spectrobes for DSDisney Interactive Studios spent about $100 million on video game development in 2006 and will spend $130 million in 2007. Staggs said: “Over the next five years or so we are ramping up to about a pace of $350 million per year [by 2012] in video game investment, principally consoles and hand-helds.”

Three months ago, Disney launched Spectrobes, a role-playing game for Nintendo’s hand-held DS produced by Disney’s Interactive Studios arm. Spectrobes so far shipped 700,000 units. This year, Disney plans to launch a multi-player online “Pirates” game in the U.S., then in Britain. But Disney aren’t just converting their franchises into games, the FPS game with dino-killer Turok will be back later this year. — From the LAtimes
