Grand Theft Auto IV launch delay of 2 or 3 weeks possible because of Halo 3

Pre-order Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360Game developer Rockstar announced at the E3 event a year ago they would release Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360 & PS3 this October 16th. But the game’s publisher Take-Two is now talking about a possible delay. Why? Because Halo 3‘s release on September 25th might have gamers pre-occupied for more than two weeks.

Ahead of the publisher’s June 11th Q2 earnings call, Wedbush Morgan’s analyst Michael Pachter says they will announce studio closures, lease terminations, game cancellations, and push back Grand Theft Auto IV’s release date as new management struggles to turn Take-Two around. Gamasutra quoted him with the following conclusion:

We believe that a two-week delay would provide a reasonable gap between the launch of Halo 3 and the launch of GTA IV, and would actually help sales of both games. In addition, a delay of the ‘normal’ SKU for GTA IV by two or three weeks could allow Take-Two to maximize revenues from the $89.99 Collector’s Edition of the game by shipping that SKU on October 17, and to increase overall profitability.” — While I doubt they’d release the Collector’s Edition first, it seems possible that you’ll be waiting for GTA IV till October 30th or even November 6th, 2007.

June 5th update: Rockstar replied to Mr. Pachter’s above comment by saying the game’s release date is NOT delayed.
