Turok’s back and he’s hungry for some dino meat!

Turok returns in an epic, story-driven FPS game set on a dark, mysterious planet in the near future. Players will take on the role of main protagonist Joseph Turok, a former Black Ops commando (of Indian descend?), who has now become a part of an elite Special Forces squad on a mission to take down his former mentor, Roland Kane, now a war criminal, who has escaped to a genetically-altered planet with his own army at his disposal.

The original Turok: Dinosaur HunterTurok’s ship gets shot down while approaching the planet, so he must depend on his instinct and military training to elude Kane’s army of well-trained soldiers, and the ravenous, unpredictable creatures that populate the dangerous environment on the planet surface. These creatures include dinosaurs naturally (with intelligence-boosting implants?), but also giant insects that are afraid of light and man-eating plants among others. The dinosaurs, which include Utahraptor and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, also have a stranger mutated look. Joseph Turok’s mission? Survive at all costs, and if he gets hungry I guess there’s plenty of dino meat to be had!

The graphics like those of the jungle habitat are looking great thanks to the Unreal 3 Engine. Also known are some new multiplayer details. Multiplayer will be for up to 16 people to battle at once, but with a twist in the shape of roaming dinosaurs. Not only do you have to avoid your foes online, but dinosaurs will also be after your meat. No confirmation on whether or not the dinosaurs are AI.

That’s about all that’s known about the game that’s set for release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in fall 2007 with a demo coming out before release. The plot appears to be a “reboot” of the Turok franchise, which declined in popularity massively after Turok: Evolution was released. The storyline of this Turok is completely different from the original Nintendo 64 games. Wikipedia, which is edited by the series’ fans mentions that there is some concern among fans about the change of story. At the end of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion was a cliffhanger twist ending, leaving the player with no true conclusion, as there were problems that had yet to be solved. A fourth Turok was never made due to Acclaim going bankrupt and out of business shortly after. This game might be the spiritual successor fans have been waiting for, at least if it includes the Cerebral Bore.

IGN has more pictures and specific tentative release dates: September 17 for America and November 23 for Europe.
