The Last Remnant is a newly announced RPG franchise from Square Enix, that uses Unreal 3 Engine visuals and is developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 due Q2 2008.
The game’s director, Hiroshi Takai, has said that players will be able to use simple commands to control enormous amounts of characters at one time, introducing large-scale battles to RPGs. A sample battle revealed a lifebar to indicate the relative ‘health’ of the opposing armies (labeled ‘allies’ and ‘enemies’).
The Last Remnant is set in a fictional world featuring a number of distinct humanoid races. The story of the game revolves around “remnants”, mysterious and coveted artifacts of varying shapes and sizes which possess magic powers and which have been the causes of several wars throughout the game’s history.
The game features two protagonists. The first one, a 18 year-old swordsman named Rush Sykes, is designed primarily for fans of traditional Japanese role-playing games. Trying to rescue his sister who has been kidnapped by some unknown organisation, Rush soon finds himself involved in a global conflict concerning the remnants.
The other protagonist is an older man with long silver hair and crimson clothes, known simply as The Conqueror, and is designed to appeal to Western gamers. The Conqueror is a remnants collector; he is also linked to Rush, although the nature of this link is unknown.
