Spore release date delayed until between April 2008 and end 2009

In a conference call to discuss Electronic Arts’ financial results, they said that Will Wright’s highly anticipated evolution sim, Spore, is no longer in the company’s plans for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2008. Most in the industry had expected the game to be released later in 2007, perhaps in time for the holiday shopping season. But it won’t be in 2007, at the earliest Spore will be released in April 2008, but EA has said the game could be delayed until the fiscal year 2009 that starts in April 2009! Recently Spore has received a final release date of September 7th, 2008, on PC, Mac and DS.

The game probably needs to evolve a little more.

According to the Gamespot Article “No More Spore in ‘07″ EA’s Fiscal Year (FY)of 2008 ends on March 31, 2008. That would indicate that FY09 begins 04/01/08 which would put the release date somewhere in the first half of 2008. Also, EA CEO John Riccitiello is quoted in the same article as saying, “…I will also tell you that its release will be right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal '08], if not sometime in early fiscal ‘09, so we don’t feel comfortable in forecasting it.” That says very specifically that the release lies somewhere between January and June of 2008. The game may be released in EA’s FY09 but not anywhere close to calender year 2009. Please don’t think I am attacking anyone. I am just saying that the statement above “…but EA has said the game could be delayed until the fiscal year 2009 that starts in April 2009!” is incorrect.

If I’m right, isn’t FY2008 already the ‘current’ FY for EA?, and if that’s the case, wouldn’t the statement in the article be incorrect?

I would love for the info to be incorrect, but you can’t spin it any other way, they said 2008 AND 2009. Let’s just hope it gets released by Christmas 2008, that’s what’s expected of EA anyway, for them to release it in time for the holiday rush.

are you serious???

I wanted to buy this november of 2006 after I heard about it in february 2006.

I was then informed that the release date have been pushed back to march 2007.

Some time in Feb 2007 i found that it had been pushed back until Fall 2007 and now this about 2008 and maybe even 9!!

I wish i’d never heard of this game. I hope I get to play it before 2012.

Basically they shouldn’t have revealed all the teaser videos until the game was basically heading on its way to the shelves, rock solid and stable. Being a game developer, a game of this magnitude needs time to evolve, there’s no point rushing it out with bugs galore. People just need to be patient; it’s got to be done right or not done at all, period. Will and EA are dead right, aim for the stars… If it is 2009, then it will be a vintage year. A game like this will draw attention not only from the gamming community, but the whole world… In the mean time guys, get a life and perhaps do something analogue for a change!

In the July ‘07 edition of GAMEINFORMER, they say that SPORE “has been delayed indefinitely”. Strange how gamestop has already sold me a pre-order.
