Nintendo doubles profits, sales totals are: Wii 6 million, DS 40 million, and US Pokemon DS 1 million in 5 days!

Nintendo DS Lite Onyx BlackNintendo today announced that they have more than doubled their yearly profit in 2006. Those are the final fiscal year operating profits of 226 billion Yen ($1.965 billion) for the year 2006 ending March 31, 2007. The company’s video game sales experienced a record high increase of 90%!

The results are due largely to full-year sales of more than 23 million portable Nintendo DS systems globally, along with 123 million Nintendo DS games. Since introduction, the Nintendo DS has now eclipsed lifetime sales of 40 million systems. For the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2007, Nintendo projects sales of 22 million Nintendo DS Lite hardware units and expects to sell 130 million DS games worldwide in the next year.

The games launched in America last Sunday and within just five days of availability, more than 1 million copies of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were sold! They are selling at a faster rate than any previous Pokemon games since the franchise’s introduction, almost a decade ago. To date, more than 155 million copies of Pokemon games have sold worldwide.

Nintendo WiiIn addition, in less than five months since introduction, the company sold 5.84 million of its new Wii systems globally, virtually every one snapped up immediately by consumers, along with nearly 29 million Wii games. Wii has taken a step toward becoming a cultural phenomenon, appealing widely to both avid and previously disinterested game-playing audiences.Nintendo said it aims to more than double its Wii sales to 14 million units in the current business year (that’s from April 2007 until March 2008) and they expect to sell 55 million Wii games worldwide in the next year.
