$40 million game Lost Planet gets new maps soon, Lost Planet 2 sequel rumored
Capcom shipped 1 million copies of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition to America and Europe before the game went on sale on January 12. If a game sells 3 million units globally it’s generally considered a smash hit.
Let’s hope it does because Capcom, it turns out, has spent $20 million developing the game and will spend another massive $20 million promoting it. That’s a whopping $40 million pricetag on Lost Planet to give you a blockbuster-like original game experience! In the past that ratio tilted heavily toward development. But Lost Planet anchors Capcom’s quest to capture share in North America and Europe, which account for 80% of the world’s $16.3 billion game market.
The first map pack should hit Xbox Live around March 9 (when a patch is also due) at 400 Microsoft Points (that’s $5 / €4.80 / £3.40) and contains two new multiplayer levels: “Radar Field,†a close quarters facility which is under construction and has a giant radar that provides an excellent vantage point, and “Island 902,†a sprawling Pacific-themed battlefield with several islands connected by bridges as well as vast underwater areas. — Additionally, “Battleground,†a multiplayer map originally offered exclusively to those who purchased the Limited Edition of the game, will be made available for free to all Lost Planet players.
Rumors are doing the rounds that Capcom is planning a sequel or follow-up to the commercial success that is Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, with a game apparently called Lost Planet Wars being planned for Xbox 360 and PS3.
January 2009 update: Capcom exec Keiji Inafune has confirmed Lost Planet 2 by saying: “We’re finally putting out new Dead Rising and Lost Planet games! As a main principle we’re thinking about multi-platform, and expanding upon both slightly from the Xbox 360 versions.”
