The PlayStation was released in 1995, then Sony redesigned it as a one-third smaller PSone in 2000. PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, and then Sony revised it as a slimline PStwo in 2005 at half the size of the original.
Logic would dictate that the PlayStation 3, which was first released in 2006, will get a smaller version by 2011. But since it’s Sony’s biggest games console so far, they are already working on the next generation of the PS3 reports T3.
Sony has said they expect to cut the size of its console’s insides (smaller chips, heatsinks, etc.), which leads the way for a redesign on the outside (we dubbed PSthree). Sony Japan says they’ll transition from 90-nm to 45-nm chips by 2008, or early 2009.
Update July 1st, 2009: Taiwanese website UDN has reported that Sony signed production contracts to begin manufacturing a new model PS3 Slim. Apparently the companies Foxconn and Pegatron are working towards delivery of the remodelled system for July 2009. Other reports have suggested an August 2009 launch for the new slim PlayStation 3. As well as simultaneous price cuts for previous PlayStation 3 hardware.
Update August 11th, 2009: A PlayStation 3 Slim console listing appeared on Amazon’s German website last weekend, but was quickly removed. Tie this in with rumors of Sony ordering enough parts from its PS3 manufacturers to make 1 million consoles in the third quarter of this year, and you’ll start to wonder why they’d need twice as many as did in the last three months. Expect an official announcement at the GamesCom video games show in Cologne, Germany, on August 19th when Sony has a 3-hour-long press conference.
Mega64: A PS3 Slim Ghost Story.
Update August 18th, 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kaz Hirai finally confirmed the rumors by speaking at Gamescom 2009. To quote: “Today is the day we introduce the PS3 Slim, available in stores from the first week of September.” It’s 32% smaller, 36% lighter, and has 34% less power consumption. It comes with a 120GB harddrive and a price drop to $299 / €299 / ?29,980.
LOL smaller chips are never going to get it down to that size, look at the Blu Ray player how you going to get the standard disc into that !!?. the HDD etc what about things like that.they will be lucky to get it down to the current 360 size which of course MS are going to be using their smaller chips to so that would look to shrink to then..
I read the newsin the Economic Times Paper
Actually Its saying that Sony will stop making chips, and will get it made by some other factory. and Soon will develop a 45nm chip.
That will make it CHEAPER, they said but nothing was told of a Redesigned PS3.
Dom: The left pictured PS3 was simply made 1/3rd smaller to show what a smaller PS3 could look like on the right, so of course it’s not technically correct, it’s just a mockup.
Reeteshinator: If you read the headline, you can clearly see it says it’s “possible”. We didn’t put the redesigned PSone & PStwo in the intro for no reason either, since in the past Sony shrunk their consoles when the PS1 & PS2 chips became smaller and as a result the heatsinks (which take up lots of space) could become smaller as well. So this is a very real possibility a redesigned PS3 is coming sooner rather than later, that’s what we’re reporting on.
I want to get a PS3 for xmas 2007 but if theres a new slimeline PSthree coming out in 2008 should i wait for that one?
Will the graphics and stuff be better in any way?
read this !!!!!!!! http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article306434.ece
NAH GET A PS3 FOR CHRISTMAS 2007.
THE SLIMLINE ONE WILL PROBABLY OVERHEAT ANYWAY. (TO START WITH AT LEAST)
the small ps3 is so exciting that I wish
it was out on my birthday which was on
1\58. But hey guess I should wait til I call
the game store!
Reducing the manufacturing process of the chips will mean they should produce a lot less heat so they shall not need such large heatsinks or fans.
Also by that time they will probably use a smaller Solid State Hard Drive which will reduce space taken up by the already existing hard drive as they may use one about the size of a flash drive but then reduce the capacity (32GB?) and smaller and thinner Blu-ray drive (Hopefully still a slot drive and not a PS1 style)
Looks just like the Wii. Sony’s gettin desperate.
