Gears of War 2nd update coming in a few months. PC version possible!

Gears Of War Collector's EditionEpic boss Mark Rein has said Gears of War fans should expect “new stuff” for the Xbox 360 game to arrive “definitely within a couple of months.” He even promised “there’ll be a fun little surprise in the next update.”

They want any downloadable content to be free, but they aren’t sure it’s possible yet. The first Gears of War download last month was sponsored by Discovery Channel and included two free maps and at the same time some tweaks were made to the game in an update. Unfortunately that update also caused gamers with a VGA connection to see jagged edges in the game and a lower resolutions, issues that have not been fixed yet.

While Mr. Rein confirmed Gears of War as an Xbox 360 exclusive. But that’s presumably for consoles, as he acknowledged: “Yeah, eventually…I don’t think that’s any great secret that we would like to do it on PC, but for now it’s a 360 game. Eventually we’ll get around to a PC version. I just don’t know when. That’s worked successfully for Halo. Halo was a big seller on PC long after it kind of peaked on the original Xbox, and they’re doing the same thing now with Halo 2.”

He continued by revealing: “The big challenge is to make a game that was designed solely for the console…to take advantage of every last little corner of that console, to fill every little crack and run as many threads as we could and do as much to exploit the power of that machine, and make it run well on enough PCs to be worth releasing. That’s a challenge. UT will help us there, because Unreal Tournament 3 will be kind of our vanguard PC product, and it’s helping us get optimization on the PC.”

“So it’s just a matter of, now, can we make Gears run on enough PCs that it’s worth selling… or do we have to wait in five years until everyone has a PC that can run it? It’s inevitable, but it’s just not there today.”

I think you’re mistaking “Updates” with “downloadable content”. The maps for GoW cannot be considered to be part of the update. Those were extra content, while the update itself would’ve been free even if they’d charged money for the content.

You’re right, sorry about that. The interview with Mr. Rein was what confused me, because he kept referencing “updates” or “stuff” when he mentioned the maps. I’ll go fix that now and just put it the way he said it in quotes.
