New Mortal Kombat 8 will be dark, gritty, and completely reinvented fighting on Xbox 360, PS3 & maybe Wii in November 2008

Mortal Kombat logoMortal Kombat‘s co-creator Ed Boon was recently interviewed by Billy from GI about Midway’s current and next-gen fighting games. It’s there he made surprise revelations about Mortal Kombat 8.

Outside of must-have options such as online multiplayer, he makes mention of some really crazy ideas he’s been having in order to bring that early 90′s arcades feeling back, only this time in a “virtual arcade” lobby setup. Here are some choice quotes:

GI: How far into development is it?
Boon: The main thing we’re doing right now is the core technology. We’re using the Unreal 3 engine, and we’re getting our base, “How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows” all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I’d like to theoretically try, but it’s not like it’s in a playable state yet. — We’re doing something with the next game that’s unbelievably unexpected, and there’s going to be an announcement. I totally was told, “You cannot talk about this thing” I think it’s going to be rolled out.

GI: How has the experience been with the next-gen, and what are some of the nuances that you’re finding with the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Boon: Our goal, graphically, with this game is to be as gritty and (I don’t like to use the word “dirty,” because I don’t want to imply not-cool graphics but) a very dark, serious Mortal Kombat. Not vibrant, saturated colors, but more of a really down and dirty Mortal Kombat game. To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, “Holy sh*t! That’s the look that we’ve been talking about” Visually, that’s what we want to do. Gameplay-wise, I kind of attribute it to what we did with Deadly Alliance, where everything is thrown out. We’re not going to have three fighting styles, we’re not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We’re reinventing everything from the ground up. We really think that’s needed — you know, we’re on Mortal Kombat 8, in a sense — to kind of wipe the slate clean every once in a while, and I kind of feel that now is the time. Our visual presentation and our game presentation and our thing that you’ll hear about very soon are all going to be new to this game. It’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

GI: What’s it like to flush it all and start over?
Boon: It’s really scary. There’s some stuff that I thought really worked well in the previous three games, but I really feel that we can’t do any more of it. We can’t do the new fighting-style stuff. We need to do something different. A lot of people say, “How do they keep selling well?” And we really believe that’s one of the reasons. We’re not afraid to say, “That’s working, but it’s time to do something new because it’s been five years”

GI: Hypothetical time-frame for release. Are we talking 2008?
Boon: Yeah. I would guess — and I wouldn’t promise — it would be around the fall, Novemberish time of 2008.

GI: Across all three platforms?
Boon: We’re talking about that.

Update April 18th, 2008: Mortal Kombat 8 has been renamed to Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe.

What would I like to see in the new mortal kombat 8. Please don’t make it like Armageddon!!! What i mean by that is give them there personal fatalities again. Please bring back everybody again. Armagaeddon i thought was so cool until it said finish him. That make your own fatality sucks and it’s bowshit sorry but that’s how i feel. Please give them there persaon fatalities that’s what makes mortal kombat and the worriors of mortal kombat. Bring back test your might everything if you want i don’t care. But please if anything give everybody there own fatalities again. give them all there special moves from every game. and give them at least 1 more fatality a total of 3 for each person. Hell if you just done that gave them all there own personal fatility and brought everybody back i would be happy with the game.

The perfect mortal kombat. Bring everybody back again give them personal fatlities again f*ck that make your own fatality shit. test your might, all personal moves they have had in the past games and more if posible. 3 fatalies per person. 1 weapon fatality. New idea team mode play as a team like on tekken with your favorite worriors. burtilitys again beside that keep it old school there nothing wrong with mortal kombat. Mortal kombat and tekken, tenchu is the only reason i go out and spend money on video gams and buy the systems they come out on. If you can do that to mortal kombat 8 I will go out and buy a play station 3 just for that game that and tekken is the only reason i would buy another play station again.

I’m guessing that Friendships are out of the question! with the whole dark and gritty seriousness of things, Shame I liked frienships – very humourous to me!

a New way of killing someone would be great, same kind of ‘Finish him/her’ intro followed by the fighter getting out there own weapon, eg: gun, chainsaw, knife, rocket launcher! and then individually finishing them off in there own unique way, it’s important to make the Fighters have a touch of Uniquness in there finishing moves and basic moves, to seperate them more from the other fighters, and Endings are important! The Endings in MK:DA/D werw cool, Armageddon Endings I agree were poor, MK8 Should have Movie clip Endings again like they had in MK4, with better graphics!

Also, if they are going to make introduce mainly New Warriors, and only have a few old ones return, it’s so predictable that they’ll bring back raiden, scorpion and sub-zero, thats fine, but they shouldn’t scrap All of the New Fighters that they introduced from MK:DA and Deception!

    Cheers..

I can understand getting rid of the fighting style stuff, but don;t get rid of the death traps, the fatalities or especially the characters. If MK 8 doesn’t have returning characters, the game is going to be a flop. I am a huge MK fan and if MK8 gets rid of the characters i’m not even going to buy it…

This game will be HOT! Seriously, I reckon it’d be awesome to bring back the graveyard stage more up to date with all of the fighters who died in Armageddon in the background in coffins and as ghosts… maybe even a cheat somewhere in the game to play as the ghost of liu kang?!

  • scorpion1411

Mk series are the best.. honestly , i’ve played each and every one since mega drive days and for those of you who dont enjoy the armedgeddon game you really need to play deception .(again) to really appreciate it.. i can’t wait for the MK8 ..

If they r going to make it dark and gritty best graphic ever then they need to make the character look bloody, scary, realism and sweaty that will be badass huh. they need to make the characters look sweaty tired, and when they get hurt they need to show scar, cut, blood on them too. and PLS do not leave out Mileena, scorpion, rayden, liu kang, kitana, reptile, Subzero, nightwolf, Kano, and get rid of new characters from mk5 mk6, they r suck, and if u r gonna makeover scropion at least make him thin cuz it doesnt make sense if he’s big with skull, skelenton r thin, make him thinny with ninja suit and for the arena stage, make it creepy with realistic lightning and etc. and for animality make sure it look real animal not like Mk 3 with glow animals, make it like real animals scary anybody agreed?
