New Mortal Kombat 8 will be dark, gritty, and completely reinvented fighting on Xbox 360, PS3 & maybe Wii in November 2008

Mortal Kombat logoMortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon was recently interviewed by Billy from GI about Midway’s current and next-gen fighting games. It’s there he made surprise revelations about Mortal Kombat 8.

Outside of must-have options such as online multiplayer, he makes mention of some really crazy ideas he’s been having in order to bring that early 90’s arcades feeling back, only this time in a “virtual arcade” lobby setup. Here are some choice quotes:

GI: How far into development is it?
Boon: The main thing we’re doing right now is the core technology. We’re using the Unreal 3 engine, and we’re getting our base, “How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows” all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I’d like to theoretically try, but it’s not like it’s in a playable state yet. — We’re doing something with the next game that’s unbelievably unexpected, and there’s going to be an announcement. I totally was told, “You cannot talk about this thing” I think it’s going to be rolled out.

GI: How has the experience been with the next-gen, and what are some of the nuances that you’re finding with the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Boon: Our goal, graphically, with this game is to be as gritty and (I don’t like to use the word “dirty,” because I don’t want to imply not-cool graphics but) a very dark, serious Mortal Kombat. Not vibrant, saturated colors, but more of a really down and dirty Mortal Kombat game. To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, “Holy sh*t! That’s the look that we’ve been talking about” Visually, that’s what we want to do. Gameplay-wise, I kind of attribute it to what we did with Deadly Alliance, where everything is thrown out. We’re not going to have three fighting styles, we’re not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We’re reinventing everything from the ground up. We really think that’s needed — you know, we’re on Mortal Kombat 8, in a sense — to kind of wipe the slate clean every once in a while, and I kind of feel that now is the time. Our visual presentation and our game presentation and our thing that you’ll hear about very soon are all going to be new to this game. It’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

GI: What’s it like to flush it all and start over?
Boon: It’s really scary. There’s some stuff that I thought really worked well in the previous three games, but I really feel that we can’t do any more of it. We can’t do the new fighting-style stuff. We need to do something different. A lot of people say, “How do they keep selling well?” And we really believe that’s one of the reasons. We’re not afraid to say, “That’s working, but it’s time to do something new because it’s been five years”

GI: Hypothetical time-frame for release. Are we talking 2008?
Boon: Yeah. I would guess — and I wouldn’t promise — it would be around the fall, Novemberish time of 2008.

GI: Across all three platforms?
Boon: We’re talking about that.

Update April 18th, 2008: Mortal Kombat 8 has been renamed to Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe.

if they can make mortal kombat
look as good as tekken and not
take anything away then m.k.
will be the best fighting ever,
And please bring back shag shun
(the player who could turn into
anyone please) i really don’t
know what they’re thinking
taking him out.stupid, make it the players can pick to and that all you need to know

BIG FAN, BUT FOR REAL COMPARED
TO OTHER FIGHTING GAMES LIKE TEKKEN, M.K
6 & 7 GRAPHICS SUCK REAL BAD,
BRING BACK SHANG SHUNG AND ALL THE NINGAS ALL OF THEM AND MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE NINGAS

Mortal Kombat 8 will be gr8 on psx3, Look forward to the New Design of it all!

With the Unreal 3 engine this game can finally be as gritty and detailed as the original MK.
If Boon can implement the graphics, lighting and texture effects of Gears of War along with a new fighting system with dodge/counter/blocking moves where characters can take the speed out off a beatdown but not out of the fight(examp; Tekken’s Law dodges where the fight pauses for a few seconds, but more Fighters Destiny (n64),with a simple dodge button to time offense and defense), we could see real fist-flying work, beautiful martial arts as in the movie and a new leader in fighting games ones again.
That would be the ideal MK for me.

will it be named mortal kombat mythologies: frost because my vision of the game is frsot gets pregnant by taven and she gives birth to a goddes named parvati. well parvati plans to make the worl an ice and fire world but the other people aen’f feeling it. so frost goes to an oracle and she tells him she is gonna get pregnant by Shao Kahn, reiko, jax, darrius, Sub zero and johnny cage. the kids she give birth to from these diffrent men will be the first new gods. gods more powerful than the elder gods and gods combined. there names will be ice, blizzard, snow, white, froze, below zero. so after she gives birth to them parvati becomes jealous and plans to kidnap nitara to travers through worls. two get pregnant from her uncle daegon to give birth to a blaze lik creature and three put a special powder over raiden, shinnok and her uncle rain to gain their power and rule the world. objective stop every step of paln and freeze parvati into mantle of the earth.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE KENSHI AND LI MEI GET TOGETHER AND GET MARRIED.

I think the PS2 shouldn’t be left out for MK8. I personally think that the next game should be made for PS2 as well. I mean, why should us PS2 owners miss out on a whole new MK game?

- make a totaly new and unique combat system; a easy to get into but hard to master one
- make the fighters unique and as balanced as possible; include some classic fighters with makeovers and a few new ones
- make it as dark as Mortal Kombat II was
- make the fighter look as realistic as they were in the first Mortal Kombat
- make it bloody and shocking, but not so over-the-top as MKII was; more like first MK
- make a good, organized multiplayer
- drop out the silly mini-games, babalities and friendships and incorporate some unique new features
- make an interesting story
- consider doing a port for the Windows PC alsongsinde xbox360 and PS3 versions
- consider doing a special version for the Wii and PS2 using the Unreal Engine 2.5 instead of the demanding 3rd incarnation
I hope you have a look at my post!

-Continue to evolve the creat a fighter, it could be a big audience grabber. Don’t leave any weapons out, maybe even make them unlockable, I saw alot of the drawings of weapons that were not made and it was a shame the weren’t. Creat-a-Boss?
-The Fatalities are nice but still really hard to master, maybe some how have a few already built in to each character after a simi-complex pattern.
-Moto Kombat ain’t half bad but still needs to be tweeked
-Konquest: Hook up with the creaters of God of War if possible it was WAY too easy other then the Mortal Kombat fights
-Some complained about the different sequences for special moves but i think those people just are scared of change
GREAT WORK GUYS KEEP IT UP

they really should bring back chameleon and khameleon in eight it would be soo much fun having both in one game.

here are some characters my friends and i want in 8
sektor, cyrax, smoke, reptile, tremor, and kitana
