Mortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon was recently interviewed by Billy from GI about Midway’s current and next-gen fighting games. It’s there he made surprise revelations about Mortal Kombat 8.
Outside of must-have options such as online multiplayer, he makes mention of some really crazy ideas he’s been having in order to bring that early 90’s arcades feeling back, only this time in a “virtual arcade” lobby setup. Here are some choice quotes:
GI: How far into development is it?
Boon: The main thing we’re doing right now is the core technology. We’re using the Unreal 3 engine, and we’re getting our base, “How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows” all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I’d like to theoretically try, but it’s not like it’s in a playable state yet. — We’re doing something with the next game that’s unbelievably unexpected, and there’s going to be an announcement. I totally was told, “You cannot talk about this thing” I think it’s going to be rolled out.
GI: How has the experience been with the next-gen, and what are some of the nuances that you’re finding with the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Boon: Our goal, graphically, with this game is to be as gritty and (I don’t like to use the word “dirty,” because I don’t want to imply not-cool graphics but) a very dark, serious Mortal Kombat. Not vibrant, saturated colors, but more of a really down and dirty Mortal Kombat game. To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, “Holy sh*t! That’s the look that we’ve been talking about” Visually, that’s what we want to do. Gameplay-wise, I kind of attribute it to what we did with Deadly Alliance, where everything is thrown out. We’re not going to have three fighting styles, we’re not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We’re reinventing everything from the ground up. We really think that’s needed — you know, we’re on Mortal Kombat 8, in a sense — to kind of wipe the slate clean every once in a while, and I kind of feel that now is the time. Our visual presentation and our game presentation and our thing that you’ll hear about very soon are all going to be new to this game. It’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen before.
GI: What’s it like to flush it all and start over?
Boon: It’s really scary. There’s some stuff that I thought really worked well in the previous three games, but I really feel that we can’t do any more of it. We can’t do the new fighting-style stuff. We need to do something different. A lot of people say, “How do they keep selling well?” And we really believe that’s one of the reasons. We’re not afraid to say, “That’s working, but it’s time to do something new because it’s been five years”
GI: Hypothetical time-frame for release. Are we talking 2008?
Boon: Yeah. I would guess — and I wouldn’t promise — it would be around the fall, Novemberish time of 2008.
GI: Across all three platforms?
Boon: We’re talking about that.
Update April 18th, 2008: Mortal Kombat 8 has been renamed to Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe.
I have been a huge fan of Mortal combat for years now i think u shold make a mortal combat that is like shoulin monks but number 2 put it as an rpg go to any relm u want get levels up may be take over camps and ask people like zubzero to lend u a hand tacking it over buy new weppons for ur charictor and armor get money buy doing jobs for people like assasinating some 1 and having a huge war with all of good vs bad rhats my idea of the best mortaal combat ever made
i think ther shold be more mortal combat films it is the best film ive ever seen and i have seen a lot but mortal combat movies are the best and think they shold make more movies
I am curious to see what it will become all though I sort of lost interest when they got rid of the realistic looking characters (digitized actors) and the whole Asian mythology feel. I really hate the industrial electric guitar 80s music that poisoned the mood and the action figure looking characters with cheesy story lines. If Boon says he wants to bring back the 90s feel of Mortal Kombat, he better tone the characters down and bring back the dark martial artist chosen to be in the tournament because of there mysterious special abilities. Fans like surreal (realistic with a little fantasy and mystery) not rendered actions figures with cheesy abilities, no mystery and cheesy story lines.
the true fans are older now and want something more mature. Don’t do what George Lucus did with Star Wars!
ive been playing mortal kombat since i was 5 (im 18 now) and there my favorite games. i can’t wait till this new one comes out and i really hope it comes out for the wii because im not getting a PS3 or a 360.
I tink the fighting should be like Virtua Fighter style and that the graphics should get a more realistic look
MKI and II: That’s where the franchise shine and that’s where the success started. When Midway came out w/ Mortal Kombat I w/ the realistic martial art digitized looking characters w/ tight dope @ss outfits, it was like watching Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon except you get to control it. But when Midway go a different direction w/ its 3-D looking characters, it’s OVER…i don’t even want to touch it…the characters are not the same and they don’t have that feeling of martial arts shyt anymore. So forget it! I mean even when they came out w/ Mortal Kombat II, it still look tight…in fact i think II it’s the best version of the series. But when they go 3-D, it sucks big time….characters look pathetic…outfits pathetic…some of them are just so pathetic…even Liu Kang and Kung Lao who I think are Asian based on their name alone looking NOTHING like Asian…wtf is that all about?? They have an asian female character who’s name is Mei li (or some shyt) and SHE TOO look nothing like asian….how pathetic is that??? I am asian and i know what asian people look like but don’t give me shytty american looking characters and sports asian names…it cries for stupidity…it almost seem like the original creators have left the team because the 3-D game look so different from the original.
So with that said, i am craving for Midway to go back to 2-D and bring back the feeling that once make this franchise great. Bring back the real looking characters of Johnny Cage w/ black pant and red belt tie…bring back the monks stage. And i remember that back then they were not able to replicate the exact version of the arcade due to inferior power of the consoles….but now that WE HAVE the technology to do it…why move to a different direction w/ 3-D, why not create the same looking 2-D and add more NEW characters. MKI and II was looking tight, don’t change to 3-D, fighting game is meant for 2-D anyway…that’s why game like Street Fighters are still popular.
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH reptilexcq! WHY CAN’T BOON GET THAT THROUGH TO HIS THICK SKULL. THE 3D MORTAL KOMBATS HAVE ATTRACTED SUCH A STUPID FAN BASE NOW. IT’S NOT LIKE IT USED TO BE WHERE YOU COULD TALK TO THE GUY NEXT TO YOU ABOUT MORTAL KOMBAT. NOW IT’S MORE LIKE,”YOU PLAY THAT GAME? WHAT A DORK!” IT HAS BECOME A JOKE AFTER MK3. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE WAS GETTING RID OF THE POPULAR ASIAN FEEL WITH AUTHENTIC LOOKING CHARACTERS! IF YOU GO 3D, GO REALISTIC AND AUTHENTIC RATHER THAN OVERWEIGHT MANIKINS! AND SCREW WHAT ANY MORTAL KOMBAT FANS THAT ARE YOUNGER THAN 24 WHO LIKE THE LAST 5 MK GAMES. THEY ARE NOT THE TRUE FANS WHO COUGHED UP THE QUARTERS BACK IN THE EARLY 90′S!!!! I WANT SOMETHING GOOD THIS TIME!
I agree , Though i liked UMK3 1 and 2 had the real MK feeling.
I bought the new 3d games but it is just not MK anymore. IT SUCKS
Also the way the characters look SUCKS.
It’s also so sloooooooow.
I do not think that MK8 will be better. it will be new but crap nonetheless.
I played the 3d MK games for about 1 week and i was sick and tired of them. I play MK 1-UMK3 every day online and those games are 14 years old but play MUCH better.
I am really excited to experience the new look- everything mortal kombat 8, the game will play great on the psx3, as much as I am down with the reinvention of it all, I want them to keep at leasta few of the Mortal Kombat characters, I appreciatee that Rayden and scorpion help make the game, but I want so much for one of the newer Fighters I fell for to be explored more - like Kenshi, Li mei, Bo rai cho, Quan chi. I would Hate it if not one of them were in MK 8!
Someone start up a petition online to say who you want in the game!
