GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64All hail the king! Rare’s GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 is considered by many to be one of the best games ever made. It truly blew the doors open for console shooters. For the first time shooters on a console (thanks in no small part to the great N64 controller and it’s gun-like Z Trigger Button) seemed to surpass that of their PC brethren in popularity, as word quickly spread about how good GoldenEye was and sales sky-rocketed. Everyone is seems was talking about and playing 007.

It garnered much critical acclaim as well due in part to its many innovations, including rumble. It used stealth quite extensively, enemies reacted differently depending on where they were shot, James had a few weapons and gadgets outside of guns that he could use, the A.I. was extremely good for the time, you could play four-player split-screen in multiplayer, and some weapons allowed you to hold two of them at once, one in each hand. GoldenEye is considered to be one of the first games in the first-person shooter genre that was able to shed the “Doom-clone” label.

Re-live the memories in the short intro for the game. And let’s hope we see the game get a re-release via the Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade.
