New Mortal Kombat 8 will be dark, gritty, and completely reinvented fighting on Xbox 360, PS3 & maybe Wii in November 2008

Mortal Kombat logoMortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon was recently interviewed by Billy from GI about Midway’s current and next-gen fighting games. It’s there he made surprise revelations about Mortal Kombat 8.

Outside of must-have options such as online multiplayer, he makes mention of some really crazy ideas he’s been having in order to bring that early 90’s arcades feeling back, only this time in a “virtual arcade” lobby setup. Here are some choice quotes:

GI: How far into development is it?
Boon: The main thing we’re doing right now is the core technology. We’re using the Unreal 3 engine, and we’re getting our base, “How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows” all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I’d like to theoretically try, but it’s not like it’s in a playable state yet. — We’re doing something with the next game that’s unbelievably unexpected, and there’s going to be an announcement. I totally was told, “You cannot talk about this thing” I think it’s going to be rolled out.

GI: How has the experience been with the next-gen, and what are some of the nuances that you’re finding with the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Boon: Our goal, graphically, with this game is to be as gritty and (I don’t like to use the word “dirty,” because I don’t want to imply not-cool graphics but) a very dark, serious Mortal Kombat. Not vibrant, saturated colors, Article continues »

Super Mario World, Gain Ground, Vigilante hit Wii Virtual Console today

Super Mario World for SNESToday Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9AM Pacific time. We’ve included videos of each game for nostalgia’s sake or so you can see if it’s for you. This week’s new games are:

Super Mario World (Super NES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points = $8): During a vacation in Dinosaur Land, Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped and a spell is cast on the inhabitants of the island. When they stumble upon Yoshi, a young dinosaur, Mario and Luigi learn that Bowser is responsible for the terrible misdeeds. Now, all Yoshis are trapped in magical eggs that Bowser has hidden throughout seven castles. Many hidden paths aid Mario in making his way to Bowser’s castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. Discover items, including a feather that gives Mario a cape that allows him to fly, or a flower that shoots fireballs in layers upon layers of 2-D scrolling landscapes. Game Intro - GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64All hail the king! Rare’s GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 is considered by many to be one of the best games ever made. It truly blew the doors open for console shooters. For the first time shooters on a console (thanks in no small part to the great N64 controller and it’s gun-like Z Trigger Button) seemed to surpass that of their PC brethren in popularity, as word quickly spread about how good GoldenEye was and sales sky-rocketed. Everyone is seems was talking about and playing 007.

It garnered much critical acclaim as well due in part to its many innovations, including rumble. It used stealth quite extensively, enemies reacted differently depending on where they were shot, James had a few weapons and gadgets outside of guns that he could use, the A.I. was extremely good for the time, you could play four-player split-screen in multiplayer, and some weapons allowed you to hold two of them at once, one in each hand. GoldenEye is considered to be one of the first games in the first-person shooter genre that was able to shed the “Doom-clone” label.

Re-live the memories in the short intro for the game. And let’s hope we see the game get a re-release via the Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade.
