Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for DSIn Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for the Nintendo DS, you take control of two heroes: Jonathan Morris, a vampire killer and his close friend Charlotte Orlean, a girl with tremendous magical ability. Amidst the chaos of World War II, two mysterious sisters emerge, working to resurrect Dracula and David and Charlotte are all that stand in their way.

Two new playable characters, each with their own unique style of play and abilities, Jonathan has weapons expertise and Charlotte can do spell-casting. Strategically switch between the characters in the heat of the action. Call on your partner and execute Summon Attacks to decimate your enemies. Collect items, weapons and magic as you explore the castle. Explore several environments new to the series, such as the desert, abandoned cities and more.

The latest in the Castlevania series may not bring anything innovative to the table, but is definitely worth checking out for its solid gameplay and refined action. Find out more in this Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin video review.

To quote the video review: “It’s not particularly bold or innovative, but the game paints a pretty picture that’s easy to appreciate. The game keeps up a great pace and maintains a steady stream of new enemies and new swords, maces, whips, and magic spells to kill them with. The action has a solid and refined feel, and the two distinctly different characters – each with dozens of ways to deal out punishment to the residents of the castle – do an exceptional job of fighting off tedium. You also have to love the thoughtful touches in the visuals, with enemies seeming to go out of their way to impress you with elaborate and often bloody 2D deaths. Portrait of Ruin does dig up a lot of old ground in providing all this content, but the bones of the past still put on a highly entertaining show.”
