PS3 launch in Europe on either March 2, 3 or 9. March firmware update features listed. PS3 HDip Camera due March. TiVo service coming Q3 2007.

Sony PlayStation 3A week ago Sony held a PlayStation 3Rooms event for the UK press to play the latest PS3 games, since it’s not out in Europe yet. At the event Phil Harrison, Sony Worldwide Studios President, got interviewed by Threespeech and let go of the latest PS3 European launch details. Here they are summed up:

The Playstation 3 European launch will fall within the first two weeks of March 2007, Sony’s financial year ends on the 3rd week of March and therefore they want to launch before the next financial year begins. Judging that UK consoles always release on a Friday, expect the European launch on either the 2nd or 9th of March. Though a strong hint was given by Mr. Harrison they are hoping to drop the PS3 on the 3rd day of the 3rd month (March 3rd).

On the same day as the PS3’s Euro launch SCE will distribute their March firmware update, which includes the following features:

* Multi-tasking (included will be audio/video conferencing while browsing the Cross Media Bar (aka XMB) and its features/gameplay).
* New XMB display options.
* New animations for audio playback.
* New photo album options.
* PlayStation Store auto-resume.
* PSP remote play advanced access option, so you can have access to your PS3’s content anywhere where there’s an internet connection.

Firmware will be constantly updated, with the view of a TV tuner and TiVo-like service to be available in the 3rd quarter of 2007.

In the same week as the European PS3 launch Sony hope to see a worldwide launch of the PS3’s HDip Camera (specifications to be announced at a later date). In terms of other accessories, Sony doesn’t see it as a necessity to manufacture PlayStation branded headsets, keyboards or mice. Jonathan of SCE’s reportedly said: “Third party companies can offer these accessories to the consumer at a price which SCE could not compete.”

An extension to the Sony online store will also make its debut in March. Titled ‘Sing Store’, PS3 owners will be able to purchase songs for their ‘Sing Star’ karaoke game from a slew of artists and will also be given the option to view the songs purchased as music videos via the video playback option within the XMB.

In terms of the European online store, while still being extremely vague, a spokesman for SCE Europe was able to explain that Sony would have no defense if they were to charge the European consumer more than in other regions as there are no extra costs on digital distribution as apposed to a product with packaging etc. So expect a $15 download to cost people in the UK around £7.50 and in the rest of Europe around €11.50.

Other notes collected by News4gamers are:

* PS3 will be sold at £425 or lower, meaning Europeans could have it cheaper than the previously stated price.
* Don’t expect to see 20GB models available in Europe, 60GB it is.
* No VGA cables will be released by Sony.
* No plans to make RSX available to Linux OS, due to security issues.
* A service to reserve your PlayStation online ID will be up and running right about now (more about this in our next newsitem).

PS3 ! I thought they had given up on that thing when the Blueray dated it’s hardware by a year? is it really still coming out I thought they would wait and make a PS4 instead.

Great! The updates are going to really make PS3 a nice hub!

we can record TV shows and then view the shows on the PSP online anywhere with a NET!

425£?! that would make it even more expensive then in the USA!or at least the same price….it’s disgusting….consoles would cost 800 american dollars if they are 425£……………..

Why would you want to “Record” a TV show and watch it “online” = poor quality and then watch it through a screen not much bigger than the size of a matchbox ?.

Though we are still waiting we know when the PS3 will be available in Europe.
Sony can’t delay again the launch of the PS3 cause of their financial year. The only good thing that the delay of the PS3 will bring to us is that a lot of failures on the PS3 will be corrected since some of them have been reported by the customers.

hopefully Sony will upgrade their online servers by then, as currently in the US the network is so flooded that most users can no longer get on line with any regularity, (see the sony playstation3 network users self help blog)

Yes the online is so called free and now you are seeing why,NOTHING is really for free,there is no such thing as a free lunch and somewhere down the line someone has to pay for it,and even if it turned out to be a big success do you really think it would stay free ?.XBL charges a very small fee and the service is excellent.

it is not a fee problem for me or I suspect the majority of the potential PS3 online gamers, the issue is that it is hardcoded into the PS3 that it only can go thru the Sony portal, so they are stuck!! and unless Sony changes that aspect of the network access or significantly upgrades their online server capability when EU comes on line it will really be a mess

7, why do you go spreading lies? the article doesn’t talk about online play at all, they are talking about on demand content costs, get it right. online play is and always will be free.

4, why do you think apple came out with the video iPod if no one wants to watch tv shows on a small screen? and besides, even if no one does, the ability to record TV shows is something no other console can do, and will help propel the PS3 into the center of the entertainment system.

1, why do you feel like bashing on Blu-Ray when it is NOT the year outdated technology that the DVD drive in the 360 is? hell, the Wii doesn’t even play DVDs!

in short, please get your facts straight when commenting on these type of articles, all of you.

ps3 is the greatest game console of all time so suck it X BOX 360
