[...] The Good Square Enix can enjoy this because hey, it means somewhat bigger sales figures of the Japanese version of the game and moreover, basically free advertising in North America. A game company can pump cash into buying magazine pages and banners on popular websites, but they can’t buy the effects of a few thousand people bragging to their friends about already having the next big thing, before its shelf date. By that same token, all the screencaps and anecdotes that float around also function as free hype, and we know how much SE likes that. The hype train will be rolling for probably a good two months, fueled largely by players simply spouting their thoughts about the game. You can’t buy that, and if you try, it’s obvious and you get busted. [...]

In a civil case, a judge can allow the jury to question a document-destroying party’s intentions. For example, judges in certain cases will tell jurors they should assume missing documents are harmful simply because they were destroyed–even if they never see the contents.

[...] As far as online is concerned, I have to disagree. Ads on popular websites are rarely given the attention that their designers had hoped. Click-through rates are miniscule. And for every successful viral promotion or online game, there are countless others being decried as shameless publicity stunts. [...]

The sentence "But if you think things are bad now, wait until the iPhone shows up" makes no sense to me. Not that the rest of the article makes much more sense. I don't see why Apple's reaction to the situation should be seen as a problem, nor do I see the situations where people squat for too long at publicly avalable machines with internet access to be Apple-specific.

As the recent Wal-Mart fake blog issues, and countless other examples have shown - PR people can be at least as wrong-headed as these buzz marketers at Zipatoni.

I've never seen a viral campaign where 30-somethings pretend to be kids in a rap video that fake wanting a PSP that they are being paid to promote.

[...] I’m not planning on doing anything sneaky - I’ll be sharing my perspectives on films and marketing (and naturally, film marketing) as well as engaging people that are interested in what we are doing at MovieSet. So I don’t dwell on the issue, I’ve posted an article on the reason for putting up this blog, as well as a Code of Ethics that we intend to follow. The bottom line - I’m not going to attempt to pull off what Wal-Mart and Sony did. My educational background is in marketing, and I loathe bad marketers (which is why I read Consumerist and AdRants), of which there are many. Hopefully with this blog, I can contribute to improving how marketing is perceived and practice, not only in the film industry, but throughout all industries. [...]
