Game attach rates: 1.5 per PS3, 3 per Wii, 5.2 per Xbox 360
GameStop revealed some surprising attach rate numbers for the just released consoles, Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii, in its quarterly financial statement call. While these are not worldwide, they do provide an interesting insight to one of the largest game store chains in the Americas and makes for a good average of the industry as a whole. However, the Xbox 360 numbers are worldwide.
* The PS3 has a low attach rate of 1.5 games per console sold. Madden NFL 07 and Resistance: Fall of Man were the best-selling titles.
* The Wii has a “surprisingly good” attach rate of 3.0 games per system sold. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel were the top sellers at GameStop and EB Games.
* Microsoft also sent out a press release to promote the current state of their Xbox 360 games business. Mentioned was the attach rate for the system, which stands at an impressive 5.2 games sold per Xbox 360. The million-sellers are Call of Duty 2, Tom Clancys Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
According to IGN, GameStop executives believe the low attach rate for PS3 is due to the “large percentage of PS3s resold at a huge premium [on eBay].” It is believed that once the PS3 is in the hands of “real gamers,” PS3 titles should see a growth in attach rate.
