Yes it’s true, the people you love to hate, those waiting in line not to play PS3 games - but to profit from its sale - strike again.
A simple search on eBay shows that 22,860 PS3’s have been sold through their auction site, and another 23,604 PS3’s are being offered for sale right now. Of course not all systems sold right away, but eBay stated that at the system’s launch date (November 17th) about 36,000 PS3’s (mostly pre-orders) had already been sold at an average price of $2,700.
Because of market saturation the prices have today dropped to an average of $1,000 at auction endings. The crazy thing is that if Sony shipped 400,000 units, eBay got 9% of that, but if the predicted halved shipment numbers are true, that means 18% of all PS3’s are being resold, that’s almost 1 in 5!
What is Sony doing to stop this insanity? They are shipping 100,000 PS3’s every week until the end of the year. Sony said it expects to ship 1.1 million of the next-generation consoles to North America by the end of the year. Just for good reference, the 20GB version costs $500 and the 60GB version $600 in stores. Good luck finding one this year if you’re still looking. Via CBC
