PS3 is 98.6% backwards compatible with PS2 and PSone games
Eventhough the PS3 has PS2 hardware hiding inside it to make backwards compatibility 100% instead of using software emulation, the transition hasn’t been exactly perfect.
In fact it’s far from it, Sony Japan has put up a list of the faulty backwards compatibility games with details of what goes wrong for each one. The Japanese Sankei Shimbun newspaper reports over 200 PS2 and PSone games are having problems. 200 is 1.3% of the 15,000 PS2 & PSone games not working. There’s no word if users adding faults in games to the Sony website will result in firmware updates, but that is to be expected (hopefully in time for the U.S. launch). So the best we can do right now is point out what big games are having problems:
* Final Fantasy XI is unplayable because of incompatibilities with the previous hard drive, but Sony is promising a downloadable game update in the future that will solve this.
* Tekken 5 has music problems with certain BGM tracks not being playable on select game modes.
* Guitar Hero won’t work with the controller, as the PS3 doesn’t recognize some of the inputs.
* Gran Turismo 4, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill 2, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams are also experiencing problems.
