There’s a PS2 hiding in the PS3 to guarantee 100% backwards compatibility for 8,181 PS2 games

PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics SynthesizerSony’s PS3 is embedded with the Emotion Engine (EE) microprocessor and the Graphics Synthesizer (GS) drawing circuit developed for its precursor, the PS2. Ken Kutaragi, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), revealed this in an interview with the Japanese Nikkei Electronics.

It’s been rumored, but now it’s confirmed, Sony did it to make sure certain games worked properly, to guarantee 100% backwards compatibility. So they ended up using real PS2 hardware instead of software, since some PS2 games did not use “the recommended library”. Sony wanted to use an emulator on the PS3’s Cell processor to provide PS2 compatibility in the PS3, because this reduces PS3 production costs (less hardware to include).

Ken Kutaragi, the PlayStation’s daddy, did close by saying the EE and GS will be “removed before long”, indicating they want to shift toward the compatibility of all 8,181 PS2 games (as of September 30, 2006) secured by the emulator in a relatively short period of time. Now let’s hope they’ll announce a Dual Shock PS2 controller adaptor for PS3, so all those PS2 games can rumble once more.

If that is so…then, ah ha….I knew they would do that. After all, its the method that mostly worked in the PS2 for PS1 games. I just wonder if there will be blue back, black back or even “razorback” issues. Silly SONY.

Ps2 Chips inside PS3?! It really is Loaded!

BUt sat thing is that the PS2 games will be region locked :(
