It's business.  The market had little competition, both sony and nintendo had different segments of the market so they were never in particularly stiff competition, so xbox saw an opening. Which ever you like, there is no doubt Xbox has made the gaming market better.  It forced Sony to make PS a phenomenally powerful machine to compete.  And Sony's PS3 will force the next Xbox to really break barriers in performance to make it a "must have" upgrade. Then Sony will one up again.  It's called a competitive market and it's the corner stone of a free market capitalist society. I love xbox, and will get the next xbox and not likely the PS4.  But I still hope the PS4 is amazing and successful to force Xbox to make their console as good as they can. Look what iPhone has done to the phone industry.  After years of stagnation the smart phone industry has launched to the next level and is rapidly progressing, all because the iPhone (which i hate!) introduced competition and forced everyone to up their game or fail.
