Super Mario Bros. minus world secrets
Astro yesterday reviewed the NES classic Super Mario Bros. that Nintendo sold 40 million copies of worldwide! This was the first game I played at age 8, so like probably 100 million other people I’ve got fond memories of playing it in the 80′s. It actually wasn’t until I finished the game that I found out you didn’t have to start from level 1-1 if you died. If you run out of lives and want to continue, then at the Game Over screen press and hold A then press start at 1 player (or 2 player) and you will start at the beginning of the world in which you died!
Another secret you might’ve heard of (which is covered in the review briefly) is the hidden world at the end of level 1-2 in Super Mario Bros. Here’s how to get there: At the pipe that leads to the flag, break two blocks so there’s one at the end touching the pipe. Now duck and jump backward toward the brick (don’t break it!). You should go through the wall and pipe into a warp zone. Jump down the first pipe to get to level -1. Here’s a movie showing Negative or Minus World:
That’s level -1, but did you know Japan got level -1, -2 & -3?
The above is what happens in the American/European version, but guess what, there’s level -1, -2 & -3 in the Japanese Famicom Disk System’s version! (its an add-on for the Japanese NES where many cartridge games got re-released on disk) Check out the madness:
These minus worlds are really programming glitches accidentally left in by the developers and creator Shigeru Miyamoto. I think it’s great they left them in as secrets and can’t wait to play it again on Wii.
