Astro yesterday reviewed the NES classic Super Mario Bros. that Nintendo sold 40 million copies of worldwide! This was the first game I played at age 8, so like probably 100 million other people I’ve got fond memories of playing it in the 80’s. It actually wasn’t until I finished the game that I found out you didn’t have to start from level 1-1 if you died. If you run out of lives and want to continue, then at the Game Over screen press and hold A then press start at 1 player (or 2 player) and you will start at the beginning of the world in which you died!
Another secret you might’ve heard of (which is covered in the review briefly) is the hidden world at the end of level 1-2 in Super Mario Bros. Here’s how to get there: At the pipe that leads to the flag, break two blocks so there’s one at the end touching the pipe. Now duck and jump backward toward the brick (don’t break it!). You should go through the wall and pipe into a warp zone. Jump down the first pipe to get to level -1. Here’s a movie showing Negative or Minus World:
That’s level -1, but did you know Japan got level -1, -2 & -3?
The above is what happens in the American/European version, but guess what, there’s level -1, -2 & -3 in the Japanese Famicom Disk System’s version! (its an add-on for the Japanese NES where many cartridge games got re-released on disk) Check out the madness:
These minus worlds are really programming glitches accidentally left in by the developers and creator Shigeru Miyamoto. I think it’s great they left them in as secrets and can’t wait to play it again on Wii.
The -3 ending was funny!
But that guy must have super concentration or played it lke thousand times to get past -2 like that
I love it! I have always been a mario junkie since I was 10. I have defeated it over and over, but did not knowabout these minus worlds. Now I have more to play! Thanks for sharing this.
You know what is EXTREMELY cool? You can get to minus world on world 8-4! And just like on the japanese version, there are 3 levels to the minus world on the USA/European version. Here’s how to get there:
To start the procceedure, you’ll need to get to world 8-4 without losing one life or taking short-cuts. (warp zones) When you come to the area with the floating pipe, hit the hidden block next to the pipe. Now jump backwards into the bottom of the floating pipe. If you do it just right, you’ll slide through the pipe. Just remember to hit the hidden block first before you slide through the pipe. Now jump up on top of the floating pipe and press down on the D-pad. When you emerge from the pipe, you’ll be in world 1-2. Get through the level, and do the original minus world trick. Next, go down the most right pipe. VIOLA!!! You’re now in the japanese minus world with 3 levels. If you complete the 3 levels, you come to a row of blocks on the top secret level 4. Chose the correct block and a black-dotted mushroom will come out. Make sure to grab it. That means that you have unlocked the unknown super player mode. It’s much harder than the original player mode, so be careful. This procceedure takes A LOT of practice. Remember!: If you lose one life through this entire procceedure or forget to acheive something required to pass to the japanese minus world, you have failed.
Rocky Conway you’re full of sh*t man. Let’s see you do it and video tape it and post it on you tube first.
