Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the “Wii Shop Channel”. Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.
With support for Flash and AJAX-based content such as Google maps, Wii users will benefit from a feature-rich Internet experience that is uniquely customized for the Wii. Opera for Wii boasts the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser, and includes the added functionality of “Zoom” and “Bookmarks”. The Wii remote control will also be an integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes. Take a look at what it looks like running on the Wii:
From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced. Still, nice to see Nintendo offering multi-functionality with this internet browser and all the other Wii channels they showed.
Nintendo has previously announced that Wii will be available in the U.S. on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006. The cost for the console is $249.99 or 25,000 Yen. Via Opera
I love my wii! Also all of you who are confuzzled by the wii are idiots. IT’S NOT HARD TO USE OR TO DOWNLOAD OPERA. in fact this very message i made on my wii. execept i have one question, what wll be different on the final version of the opera browser vs the “trial?”
you can save websites on the operas favs so you don’t have to type a website in all the time (only works on final)
That’s in the trial already! Oyy Vayeee. Com’on can’t someone make a GOOD answer. In the trial there are 3 buttons to press: enter address, favs, and help (i think.) Someone has got to know what’s in the final that’s different.
hello people! do any of you know if there is an exact date for when the FULL opera browser comes out?
Looks like the Wii is utilizing their WiFi technology for other purposes aside from just online gaming. Good idea, but would anyone use the Wii for browsing purposes when they have computers?
My family uses the Wii for internet a few hours a day. It is like having a 24″ tv screen! It is also fun to watch “You Tube” videos on it (even though it keeps on stoping), so yeah, we use our Wii the majority of the time!
Oops…I mean 24″ computer screen…and add a “p” to my stopped…!
Oops…I mean 24″ computer screen.
…oh crap..I put the same thing twice..im going a little “Wii-tarded”
Full version coming out June 30th, 2007 for 500 wii points.
