Wii includes OperaOpera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the “Wii Shop Channel”. Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.

With support for Flash and AJAX-based content such as Google maps, Wii users will benefit from a feature-rich Internet experience that is uniquely customized for the Wii. Opera for Wii boasts the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser, and includes the added functionality of “Zoom” and “Bookmarks”. The Wii remote control will also be an integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes. Take a look at what it looks like running on the Wii:

From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced. Still, nice to see Nintendo offering multi-functionality with this internet browser and all the other Wii channels they showed.

Nintendo has previously announced that Wii will be available in the U.S. on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006. The cost for the console is $249.99 or 25,000 Yen. Via Opera

We’ll update as soon as Nintendo announces the Opera release date on Wii. The word out right now is that while it has been delayed since launch, it should be available soon and will still be free until July 2007.

wiis opera browser is free til mid 2007 then everyone has to download from the shop channel with wii points purchased with real money. (price to be announced)
Once you have the Opera software downloaded to the console connection to the in ternet is as free as your home broadband connection. as for flash, java etc.. if your wii is on WiiConnect24 then it will recieve updates ‘XP style’ as long as its plugged in (even if its off) direct from nintendo (perfectly secure unlike microsofts…)

Ok stupid question. I just got the LAN adapter and as I type the Wii is doing an “update”. How do you get the Free Opera browser? And then, what is WiiConnect24? Is that something I have to set up on the console, online how what yikes I’m lost!
    Help please.

Robyn, to get the free Opera browser you have to go to the Wii Shop channel (where you normally buy Virtual Console retro games) and then click on Software. That’s where it is.
