Wii Opera browser a free download worldwide until June 2007

Wii includes OperaOpera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the “Wii Shop Channel”. Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.

With support for Flash and AJAX-based content such as Google maps, Wii users will benefit from a feature-rich Internet experience that is uniquely customized for the Wii. Opera for Wii boasts the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser, and includes the added functionality of “Zoom” and “Bookmarks”. The Wii remote control will also be an integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes. Take a look at what it looks like running on the Wii:

From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced. Still, nice to see Nintendo offering multi-functionality with this internet browser and all the other Wii channels they showed.

Nintendo has previously announced that Wii will be available in the U.S. on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006. The cost for the console is $249.99 or 25,000 Yen. Via Opera

HAve to get Wii before June 2007! One Doubt I have is.. Does the Wii HAve WiFI interent Connectivity? I mean can I cnoonect my Wii to the Net using my HOMe Wifi Net?

Yes, WiFi is standard received on Wii, Reetesh. I will actually use the Nintendo WiFi connector I bought to play DS games online.

Oh.. ThanX! Or else that doubt would have been in my reasons to Why delay a Wii purchase :P

You mean to say that you can live without the Wii version of Zelda: Twilight Princess in 2006? I can’t imagine that :-P

I’ve managed TO not play a GC game for the WHOLE generation, Let alone TOUCH a GC controller :( I think I can handle that :P But I would be happy if I get it in 2006 :D Does the pries in Christmans shopping INCrease or decrease :?

have you also managed not to use google or touch a keyboard for a ‘whole generation’? it takes more time to write these comments than look up the answers to your questions.

They keep saying that it’ll support “Flash content”, but what they neglect to mention is what VERSION of flash they’ll support…

Flash 9 was released a month or two ago and is a phenomenal improvement over previous version - it is finally a valid development platform and could be the source of an entire (enormous) community of homegrown Wii games development.

Unfortunately, since they’ve not even finished porting Flash 9 (or even 8) to Linux yet… I have major doubts that the Wii with its different hardware architecture will see anything better than the 3+ year old Flash 7. :(

Please prove me wrong.

lol, I’ve been Helping others with so many things like this and Finally I see someone Who can help so I asked.. and I never Hesistate to search google or anything when others ask me for something….. I thought that someone KNows it already and hence save time by letting them tell me…

This THing (the reply by mr. Poopie) Bothered me whole day throughout college.. Dont bother answering that question.. From Now on U can expect NO questions from myself. I wont bother Anyone. I will be on my way then ….. :| I will “Google” “Digg” and “youtube” myself with a “keyboard” for the whole generation and not bother anyone here:| sorry.

Reetesh, just speaking for myself here, but it’s a blog so you can ask whatever you want. I always assume that when someone doesn’t get their answer they’ll google it anyway.
