Wii Opera browser a free download worldwide until June 2007
Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the “Wii Shop Channel”. Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.
With support for Flash and AJAX-based content such as Google maps, Wii users will benefit from a feature-rich Internet experience that is uniquely customized for the Wii. Opera for Wii boasts the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser, and includes the added functionality of “Zoom” and “Bookmarks”. The Wii remote control will also be an integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes. Take a look at what it looks like running on the Wii:
From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced. Still, nice to see Nintendo offering multi-functionality with this internet browser and all the other Wii channels they showed.
Nintendo has previously announced that Wii will be available in the U.S. on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006. The cost for the console is $249.99 or 25,000 Yen. Via Opera
HAve to get Wii before June 2007! One Doubt I have is.. Does the Wii HAve WiFI interent Connectivity? I mean can I cnoonect my Wii to the Net using my HOMe Wifi Net?
by Y.V.Reetesh on Sep 26, 2006 at 11:57 am
Yes, WiFi is standard received on Wii, Reetesh. I will actually use the Nintendo WiFi connector I bought to play DS games online.
by supadupagama on Sep 26, 2006 at 12:14 pm
Oh.. ThanX! Or else that doubt would have been in my reasons to Why delay a Wii purchase
by Y.V.Reetesh on Sep 26, 2006 at 12:36 pm
You mean to say that you can live without the Wii version of Zelda: Twilight Princess in 2006? I can’t imagine that
by supadupagama on Sep 26, 2006 at 12:47 pm
I’ve managed TO not play a GC game for the WHOLE generation, Let alone TOUCH a GC controller
I think I can handle that
But I would be happy if I get it in 2006
Does the pries in Christmans shopping INCrease or decrease
by Y.V.Reetesh on Sep 26, 2006 at 1:45 pm
have you also managed not to use google or touch a keyboard for a ‘whole generation’? it takes more time to write these comments than look up the answers to your questions.
by PoopieCloud on Sep 26, 2006 at 3:13 pm
They keep saying that it’ll support “Flash content”, but what they neglect to mention is what VERSION of flash they’ll support…
Flash 9 was released a month or two ago and is a phenomenal improvement over previous version - it is finally a valid development platform and could be the source of an entire (enormous) community of homegrown Wii games development.
Unfortunately, since they’ve not even finished porting Flash 9 (or even
to Linux yet… I have major doubts that the Wii with its different hardware architecture will see anything better than the 3+ year old Flash 7.
Please prove me wrong.

I don’t think there’s much to worry about with regard to Flash version, adobe have made it clear that we can expect a version for linux, they didn’t bother with Flash 8 and that’s annoyed me more than i’d anticipated, there’s no elegant failsafe provided, flash 8 content just doesn’t work with flash 7. It sounds like flash player is becoming far more modular and generally getting a reworking, the existing linux version of flash is pretty ropey, the better they make the codebase the easier it will be to maintain ports for platforms like Wii, PPC & 64bit Linux, Legacy PPC Mac and 64bit windows. The nicest thing about this news regarding Wii is that we know know that the potential is there for updates should serious bugs appear.

AnonyWii: you’re thinking of playing internet Flash games right? I know I’m hoping everything Flash will work fine on Wii too, it adds even more for folks used to playing webgames on the PC only when they can play them on the TV easily (of course Nintendo hopes they’ll download some classic games from them after that :))
Reetesh: You don’t have to explain yourself, just know that not everyone online will be always polite & friendly. It’s usually even if you get 10 nice reactions, it’s the 1 negative reaction (even if it’s constructive criticism) that bothers a person, but you have to remember that as long as there’s no insulting going on (which we delete when we see it) that that person has a right to speak his/her mind. In this case it’s just Nintendo’s fault for not putting all the needed specifications on their websites.

by Y.V.Reetesh on Sep 27, 2006 at 12:14 pm
supadupagama: well, not really but it’ll be nice when content on the BBC websites doesn’t trip it up, shame the thing doesn’t sound like its going to have realplayer support, that would be very cool. I think up to date flash will make the option of web browsing on the TV even more enticing, it opens up watching crap on video.google.com and youtube as a more communal activity
The one thing we need now is an opera mini style browser that can be hosted on the Wii for download play on a DS to allow access to internet content in a convenient format, unless the DS browser pack has a mobile phone style mini mode to make browsing a less painful experience.

We’ll update as soon as Nintendo announces the Opera release date on Wii. The word out right now is that while it has been delayed since launch, it should be available soon and will still be free until July 2007.

wiis opera browser is free til mid 2007 then everyone has to download from the shop channel with wii points purchased with real money. (price to be announced)
Once you have the Opera software downloaded to the console connection to the in ternet is as free as your home broadband connection. as for flash, java etc.. if your wii is on WiiConnect24 then it will recieve updates ‘XP style’ as long as its plugged in (even if its off) direct from nintendo (perfectly secure unlike microsofts…)

Robyn, to get the free Opera browser you have to go to the Wii Shop channel (where you normally buy Virtual Console retro games) and then click on Software. That’s where it is.

by Clay on Mar 9, 2007 at 8:10 pm
you can save websites on the operas favs so you don’t have to type a website in all the time (only works on final)
by steve on Mar 13, 2007 at 4:59 pm
That’s in the trial already! Oyy Vayeee. Com’on can’t someone make a GOOD answer. In the trial there are 3 buttons to press: enter address, favs, and help (i think.) Someone has got to know what’s in the final that’s different.

by Jonathon on Jun 25, 2007 at 7:39 am
Jonathon, if you already downloaded the free Opera to your Wii, then it will be free forever.
Most likely Opera will get a newer version later on and they hope that it will have features you’d be willing to pay for. But the version you have now seems good enough.
PS: Go to the Wii Shop and look at your already downloaded software/games, and search for the Opera browser you downloaded to check if it has an Update button near it, that will update Opera to the latest free version before the month is over.

this shek doesn’t work
by .l. on Mar 1, 2008 at 9:45 pm
virarceus: FALSE. it is illegal to begin with to even attempt that degree of software distribution, however what you are saying is false. each channel has a unique line of coding which makes it unique to your nintendo wii, thus meaning that it will not operate on any other wii system.
you can copy savegames and .dll’s and such, but they won’t help you… transferring channels via SD isn’t a valid method as the channels will only operate on one console
sooner or later, someone will be able to disable the crack meaning that the coding is generic, and so will work with a simplified, modded wii system. the only disadvantage would be that you would lose all forms of wifi capabilities, as there would be no wii code to verify.
thanks,
tom
