Nintendo Wii is not region-free

The Nintendo Wii will not be region free Representatives from Nintendo of America confirmed to 1UP this morning that the “Wii will be region encoded by territory.”

Last week Perrin Kaplan, the Vice President, Marketing & Corporate Affairs for Nintendo of America, was interviewed several times at the Wii launch announcement. During those interviews she repeatedly said the Wii would be region-free. So no wonder everyone was confused when the Nintendo UK boss said it wasn’t. You can see it 18 minutes into the video:
