I LOVE zelda games....but I've never played this one! Is it really that good? I never played it cause of the side scrolling...I've recently beaten zelda twilight princess so I've been wanting to play another...I've never played windwaker, a link to the past, and zelda 2. Which one should I play first?

I played this game when I was a kid and came back to it recently. Found this review and loved every word. Great job!!!

I was a bit disappointed at first when I purchased this game so many years ago to find it so completely different than the original Zelda. But after about 10 minutes I found that this game was very unique and challenging in its own right. Many people didn't like the side scrolling aspect but I found it to be very interesting. I bet all those naysayers would have loved this game if it didn't have the name Zelda in the title.

I have never actually beaten this game and so we will see if my years of gaming experience since then will give me what I need to get it done.

Thanks for the great review and look forward to finding more.

This was actually a really great and detailed review. A few mistakes here and there (you start w/ four boxes, not three), but I'm just picky when it comes to that, so don't mind me. You're review was still terrific. :P

This is easily the single most difficult game of the series and I still maintain that it's my favorite - even above ALttP and OoT (I've nearly been crucified for saying such things...) - mostly because of it's detail, difficulty, strong story, and originality. And, though I still maintain that it's my favorite of the series, I also have my moments where I'm pretty much throwing the controller and turning the game off out of frustration - only to pick up the controller and turn the game back on five minutes later, determined to beat the current task at hand.

Well, that's enough of my inane ramblings. This is your review, not mine. So, fantastic review. Definitely the best I've seen for this game. Hell, probably one of the best and most detailed I've seen in general.

Great job. And I'll look around for your name and hope to find more reviews by you. Or at least hope that you do eventually make more reviews and well done and detailed as this one. :)

God i had this game as a kid and its AWFUL! zelda 1 was great and so was link to the past and the game boy games but zelda 2 is quite possibly the worst sequel of all time. Everything about it is niggly, unfair and badly planned! AVOID!

Very interesting, thanks Scott! I am very tempted to try what you said about the replay value . . . but I know I could probably spend my time better than attempting that! lol.

Every palace has one inventory item and the boss (where you place the crystal afterwards). If you don't get the inventory item, and still place the crystal, then the palace won't be destroyed. In fact, once you leave the dungeon, all the monsters except the boss (and any mid-palace "bosses", for the later palaces) will regenerate. So, if you're a little behind in leveling, an extra run or two through a palace can be a lot more interesting than experience grinding the random encounters.

One other comment about the Replay Value - once you beat the game, you go back to having four heart and magic containers. But, you retain the spells. So, you can play through again without getting any more containers. It's quite a challenge getting through the later palaces, and then the Golden Palace, with only four hearts and four magics. The last boss before Dark Link particularly (The Thunderbird) - it takes all the magic you have to "trigger" him, leaving nothing for jump or defenses. Very difficult to get hits in. And, two hits and you're dead. I spent months trying to do this without cheating with savestates before I finally managed to do it. But, does stretch out the replayability a bit :)

Oh, and glad to hear you are enjoying the game! It was definitely fun but very difficult! In the classic NES style. ;)

As for getting beating a castle without getting the item, interesting! Well if you can verify that, then I'll make the change in the review. :)
