Super Paper Mario coming to Wii

IGN’s Matt Casamassina was asked in the latest mailbag about the 2.5D GameCube platformer Super Paper Mario and why Nintendo announced it for release this year and isn’t talking about it anymore. Astro and me were talking about this the other day and I noted I’d expect Nintendo to bring it to the Wii since that’ll be out soon. Here’s the mailbag confirming it.

Question: It doesn’t seem like Super Paper Mario for the GCN is coming out on October 9th (given that it hasn’t been released in Japan yet, and everyone but Nintendo has the game listed as Q4 ‘06 or Q1 ‘07). I know you vaguely hinted at games for another console being moved onto Wii instead. So is there any chance Nintendo is going to move Super Paper Mario onto Wii? Or was that just a one-time deal with Zelda?

Matt responds: Hmm. How should I write this? Have to be vague, you know? Let me just say that yes, Paper Mario will be headed to Wii and not GameCube. Now read between the lines, damn you! Wait. That was a terrible hint! All right, that’s it for today.

Having a Zelda, Metroid, Wario & Mario game for the Wii launch period, wouldn’t that be amazing? Then follow that up with all the fun looking third party games and Super Mario Galaxy coming to Wii later, things are looking sweet!

OMG yes! I was hoping this would be the case, but this really makes me happy to hear it all but confirmed (not officially of course, but I trust Matt). As supa said, we were discussing this cause I was worried that if it continued to be released on GCN, many people would overlook it and it’d just get lost in the shuffle. I hope it’s planned for launch, cause if so, as Supa said, this will be one heck of a Nintendo launch.

I just… cant control!!! I Have to get a Wii, after 6 years of No nintendo (got DS this Year) I am dieing to finally get hands on such Wuality games… I’ve been playing PS2 platofrmers which by themselves are of high standards and GREAT quality, but havent played ninty games in ages…

I too agree, there are alot of gamers that grew up in the nineties and feel a little lost in the current gamescene. I sure hope nintendo will bring alot of that nineties gameplay back where the gamecube failed to do so.

The part of me that LOVES my GameCube is sad. But I also want Wii to do well, so I’m happy with the news. Either way I will be playing it. The Paper Mario games are so enjoyable. I’d love to see the same art style applied to a platformer.

Definately makes sense to have a Mario title ready to go at launch and what better title than the Paper series! Paper Mario just blew me away when it first came around and I have no doubts this will be just as good.
