SNK announces they will wait till 2009 or 2010 before they release a PS3 title
While Nintendo seems to be gaining support by the day, Sony is apparently losing it.
SNK has announced that they will hold off on releasing a Playstation 3 title until 2009 or possibly even 2010!
Why such a long wait before they are willing to commit to PS3 development? Well apparently one reason is because they see the PS2 as still being viable due to it’s huge userbase, ease of development and low cost, while the PS3 won’t be viable for at least a few years.
Yoshihito Koyama, overseas marketing manager of SNK gives his perspective to Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft:
“My first impression is that it’s expensive. The PlayStation 2 is good enough. It’s small and cheap. For us, for manufacturers, we have to invest in a new system, and the PlayStation 3 is a risk. There won’t be enough consoles at launch. Few consoles mean few software sales. We need to wait three or four years. Maybe 2009-2010 is a good time to release a game for the PS3.”
Does this mean that support will switch instead to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii? SNK is still supporting the PlayStation 2, whose titles are backwards compatible on the PS3. As well as supporting the PSP with Metal Slug Anthology, which is also coming to the Wii. There are no 360 titles announced so far, but SNK has supported the Xbox in the past so it’s probably a given that the 360 will recieve some suppot in the future.
This is dire news for the dedicated SNK fanbase and for Sony in general, whose PS2 was strongly supported by SNK. And SNK is not the only company to hold-off on immediate support for Sony’s newest game system. Atari has also announced that they will be holding off until 2007 before releasing a PS3 title. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a trend.
