Quake 4 1.3 Point Release new features info

Quake 4: Special EditionPlanetQuake4 previewed a test build of Quake 4’s 1.3 Point Release, which will be released in the coming days. This included: a look at the new gametype “Deadzone”, the “Buy Mode” game option, the updated multiplayer physics, and performance enhancements.

To quote: “To get a true sense of what it is like to play the new Deadzone gametype, a group of id Software employees were gathered to play with us on a local server. Deadzone is a team-based gametype that requires players to pickup a rune and then proceed to the center of the map where the Deadzone areas are located. The entire strategy of the game lies in staying alive in the Deadzone as long as possible. For every second you stand inside the Deadzone, you will receive one point.”

Buy Mode featuring in the 1.3 Point Release is a new feature that’s a server side option that can remove armour, weapons and ammunition from any Quake 4 map. Like Counter-Strike, as players enter a ‘Buy Mode’ battleground with a number of points that are used to purchase equipment and health, but in addition items can also bought during fights, combatants presumably racking up ‘cash’ to buy more powerful equipment as battles ensue.

The 1.3 Point Release will also introduce a new weapon, the Napalm Launcher (which not only sets enemies on fire but, it appears, has a damage-over-time after effect) fixes and gameplay and performance tweaks, new maps and alterations to Quake 4’s physics. Apparently, the physics changes have been much in demand from the community and it’s said that the alterations increase the pace of multiplayer games through increased player acceleration.

id Software will release the 1.3 Point Release for Quake 4 before QuakeCon, which runs from August 3 to August 6.
