Neopets puts virtual pets on your cellphone
The New York Times reports a cellphone-based (tamogotchi-like) version of its popular Neopets site launched last week. “The site lets users adopt, feed and nurture their pets and do battle with cartoonish creatures including the cat-like Aisha and the dragonlike Scorchio.”
MTV bought Neopets.com year ago for $160 million and is now looking to cash in on the game that gets played by 10 to 13 million people for free (it’s ad supported since 1999) every month. However, the mobile version will cost $3 per month.
There are cellphone versions of many popular video games, but they are usually distinct experiences from the computer- or console-based versions. Neopets is different in that users will play with the same pets on both screens. For example, if they feed their pet a banana on the phone, it will be more nourished when they plop down at the computer.”
