World of Warcraft owns half the MMO marketshare

World of Warcraft is pretty popular among MMOs. The updated subscriber numbers as of May 2006 set it at over 6.5 million! Of all subscription-based MMOs, World of Warcraft takes up 50.6%. From high to low, the rest of the MMO world is dominated by Lineage, World of Warcraft and Runescape.

This graphic from mmogchart.com shows the number of subscriptions in a timeline. The bright green (almost vertical) line is, World of Warcraft. Interestingly, the growth here implies that WoW’s market share is caused by many new players, rather than players deserting other MMO’s for it. The market share is large, but the market is being expanded by World of Warcraft.
