[...] Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi has made many outstanding and sometimes outlandish remarks over the past weeks, including a statement that the PS3 will replace PC’s. And now in another new interview via Japanese site PC Impress Watch, Mr. Kutaragi talks about his plans for incorporating the Playstation 3’s Cell processor into other kinds of devices. Kutaragi stated that the Cell processor could be scaled down considerably, leading to smaller Cell’s that could fit in domestic applications. “Just two SPEs (Synergistic Processor Elements) are all that’s needed… But first we have to computerize home electronics. Currently this is not the case. This is the real problem.” [...]

well if the PS2 cluster project is any indication, someone's gonna try to tie the PS3 into a cluster and see what they can do.

Jeff, the two motion sensing controllers are very different, I'll give you that. While it's not a crime to bring different technology together in their own hardware, it's gotten a bit crazy when in the past Sony added analog controls and later a rumble function after Nintendo added it to their controllers before. That's why it's easy to see where the copycat label came from. I can't answer your questions about the ps3 cluster workings though, although when they first spoke of it, they made it sound like an online world dominating Skynet system ;)

DBX00, the place his comments came from is Sony's overal vision to own your livingroom. He actually says it right above the quote I bolded. It's not even a bad thing per definition either, they wanted the ps2, psx and now the ps3 to be all-in-one for your convience mediaboxes, but that's hardly going to replace your pc any time soon.

People are taking his quote about the PS3 not needing a computer completely out of context. He was responding to LiveAnywhere saying that the PS3 wouldn't need to interact with a computer to do certain tasks because it is a computer. Hence, “The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC.“ That's completely different than saying that the PS3 will completely replace your computer.

you have a point but then agian what if they were keeping it secret just because of this. it's my personal belief that sony started a redesign after there was poor reception of the boomerang controller, among these things came the idea for motion senceing. also if you notice 2 big things, 1. the Revolution controler isn't exactly living up to expectations, and 2. the PS3 controler is really a PS2 controler with no rumble and a very clumsy motion sensor, given the apparent crappyness of the new addition I'm not sure if sony even really intended to do this. and BTW I was half right before, there was a patent made out in the PS1 days by sony for this technology. on the computer market, I'm not sure if he's anywhere near on point, even as a linux user myself I'm not quite sure how this linux out of the box thing will go. will the cell processors act like a beowulf cluster inside the PS3? will ppl who prefer windows take to PS3 linux? and most importantly will the kernal be stuck in a primitive version like PS2 linux was?

Jeff, while we're unbiased here, I realize it might sound accusing. That's because PS3 developers didn't know about the new motion controller until 1 month ago, despite Sony announcing their new controller 1 year ago. Sony saying they probably developed their motion controllers in tandem doesn't add up. I personally don't care about them having it or not, because developers can choose to put it in their games or not, and up until 1 month ago all games have been developed without the function in mind.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't sony have some sort of idea for motion sensing awhile ago, like in he PS1 era. I also think that parts of the Revolution (refuse to call it the Wii) seem to copy off the eyetoy's functionality. don't get me wrong I plan to buy both systems, and the revolution on opening day unlike the PS3, but I think that noone should be accused of ripping off things. Sony's a Japanese company and the Japanese as a ppl are known for adopting other culture's values as they see fit, why can't sony do the same?
