DS Lite versus DS & PSP backlight

Here’s a great video review of the original DS versus the new DS Lite and it’s features. Since you’re probably most interested in the improved backlight, here’s the movie*:

* click on the screen to play if it doesn’t load after pressing play button

Besides now looking very easy on the eyes, it’s also equally slick looking and about twice as bright on the maximum light level as the PSP’s backlight. Check it out yourself:

They both have Japanese games but maybe the reason ds is more popular in Japan and less so in the west is the lack of westernised games on the DS. I’m saying games like bubble bobble and cute non-violent games are not appealing as much to westerners as GTA etc. Hmm might be wildy inaccurate but just a thought.

I noticed some people talking about the consoles’ different refresh rates. Well, I have both, and it seems the PSP has a slightly better refresh rate.

I mean, while playing Yoshi’s Island DS, for example, there is a significantly noticeable ‘trailing’ effect going on when the characters move around and scroll through the levels. Enough to make me avoid playing the ds in a moving car or bus (makes me nauseous).

However, I could easily play the PSP in a bus or car. Even in graphically intensive games like Syphon Filter, the trailing effect is far less noticeable.

I’m not trying to bash the DS; it’s a great system. But there’s just something more tolerable, visually, about the PSP’s screen, despite it being less bright.

Response # 30 seems to hit the facts head on and I feel these statements are very accurate concerning the PSP. If the thing had a hard drive and was less Sony proprietary, I would shell out money for it. Until then, I am waiting and also eyeballing the DS Lite.

just a thought… but does it really matter which has a brighter screen? they are totally different hand helds =)

cant we all just.. get along? ^.^

  • http://wtfbias.com What a retarded test

The author of this post decides to test a DS on a pure white background against a PSP on a dark multicoloured background, I wonder which one will look brightest when you take a photo.

Try a fair test, then come back.

Although I must say, I own both and the DS is probably lighter, but I still have it on the 75% brightness setting as 100% seems a little too bright.

The PSP’s backlight is more than adiquate.
