Here’s a great video review of the original DS versus the new DS Lite and it’s features. Since you’re probably most interested in the improved backlight, here’s the movie*:
* click on the screen to play if it doesn’t load after pressing play button
Besides now looking very easy on the eyes, it’s also equally slick looking and about twice as bright on the maximum light level as the PSP’s backlight. Check it out yourself:

I noticed some people talking about the consoles’ different refresh rates. Well, I have both, and it seems the PSP has a slightly better refresh rate.
I mean, while playing Yoshi’s Island DS, for example, there is a significantly noticeable ‘trailing’ effect going on when the characters move around and scroll through the levels. Enough to make me avoid playing the ds in a moving car or bus (makes me nauseous).
However, I could easily play the PSP in a bus or car. Even in graphically intensive games like Syphon Filter, the trailing effect is far less noticeable.
I’m not trying to bash the DS; it’s a great system. But there’s just something more tolerable, visually, about the PSP’s screen, despite it being less bright.
Response # 30 seems to hit the facts head on and I feel these statements are very accurate concerning the PSP. If the thing had a hard drive and was less Sony proprietary, I would shell out money for it. Until then, I am waiting and also eyeballing the DS Lite.
just a thought… but does it really matter which has a brighter screen? they are totally different hand helds =)
cant we all just.. get along? ^.^
The author of this post decides to test a DS on a pure white background against a PSP on a dark multicoloured background, I wonder which one will look brightest when you take a photo.
Try a fair test, then come back.
Although I must say, I own both and the DS is probably lighter, but I still have it on the 75% brightness setting as 100% seems a little too bright.
The PSP’s backlight is more than adiquate.
Suckiest thing evah (DS)
1st GTA IS ON DS !
2th NFS carbon and mw are also on ds!
3th i got them both
-psp owns in graphics and race/shooting games
-ds more fun/unique and gameplay!
so i like both however psp gets bored after a while
4th ds realy can’t handel whit gta,nfs graphics it total diferent thn psp
final:psp owns race/shooting games
ds owns…..the gameplay(behalve in gta) and fun-factor
41st OH YEAH
I’ve been had a ds and I juss bought a psp. c’mon now the psp is way better have any of u played that tekken Dark Resurrection on it. what does the DS have on that. Dogs!? what da F**k. The psp is better enough said. yup sorry
Of course the DS lite will be brighter when it has as white background vs a anything even another DS with a dark background. Thats unfair, give the PSP a lighter background and it wont look nearly as dark. The DS lite is brighter than psp. but not the the extreme your suggesting
