Command & Conquer The First Decade

Command and Conquer the First Decade (DVD-Rom)Command & Conquer has been one of the PC’s strongest franchises over the last ten years. Yeah, it’s a little hard to believe, but the first C&C is over a decade old at this point. Since then, the series has undergone some serious changes. The Red Alert, Tiberium, and Generals universes all had pretty distinct feels to them.

Seeing as it’s been a full ten years IGN caught up with one of the original Westwood team Louis Castle, now working at EA LA as VP of Creative Development (appropriately on the C&C series and the 360 version of Battle for Middle-earth II) and asked him a few questions about the franchise over the last ten years.

IGNPC: Is it hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the first Command & Conquer game hit stores?
Louis Castle: You bet it is! It’s hard to believe I’m old enough to remember the many years before there were Real-time Strategy games!!

IGNPC: How’s it been seeing the community response for the 10th year anniversary collector’s edition?
Louis Castle: Fantastic! I was personally really excited when this compilation was brought up since I have many friends who have asked how they can get the earlier C&C products for their modern PCs. Many own the entire series, but have upgraded their machines to the point where getting games from the mid 90s to work is a real chore. It is great to offer the series in one set—20 CDs now on 1 DVD—and I’m very happy to see so many fans excited by the offering.

IGNPC: What’s your favorite game from the 12 game collection coming up? How about the fan favorite? Can you tell which game folks would pick if given the choice?
Louis Castle: I have a couple of favorites that shine above the rest in my mind. Tiberian Sun for the innovation, characters, and story and Red Alert 2 with Yuri’s Revenge for the amazing balance between three very unique sets of units and abilities. I’m not sure what the fan favorite will be, but I suspect a good number of them will pick the original C&C for the nostalgia alone.

IGNPC: Lastly, something any member of the C&C community wants to know… where the hell is the next game in the franchise? And also, it’s not C&C Renegade 2, is it?
Louis Castle: Come on! You know we have not announced anything yet! I’d like to tell the world, but for now I can say that the first decade of C&C won’t be the last and that soon, we will be giving the fan base inspiration for a whole new chapter in our ongoing dialog.
