Seems like video games are finally getting their due at the cinemas with flicks that do the video game properties justice. At least that’s the direction that game movies seem to be heading with the many flicks in the works, including a chilling adaption of Konami’s psycho-horror game Silent Hill and of course the highly anticipated Halo movie being headed up by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, who will executive produce. And many more game-based movies are on the horizon (click here for a feature I did a while back on upcoming game flicks)
Ghost House Pictures, led by director Sam Raimi (both Spider-Man films, the Evil Dead franchise) and producer Robert Tapert (The Grudge, Xena: Warrior Princess), have purchased the game-to-movie rights for Siren from Sony and shooting is expected to start off this year.
No director or cast has been attached to the movie yet. But penning the screenplay will be Michael Gordon, author of Warner Bros.’ upcoming 300, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. Joining Raimi and Tapert on production duties will be Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment (The Grudge, The Ring 2), and Ted Adams and Rick Privman will executive produce.
In the movie, an American medical student will search for her missing sister in Japan. Her investigations lead her to the village of Hanuda, where evil has taken hold of its citizens.
Siren was originally released in Japan in late 2003 on the PlayStation 2, with the North American version hitting stores in April 2004. A sequel, Siren 2, is scheduled for release later this year.
