Console launch number comparisons
AE Interactive tries to put the recent US Xbox 360 launch numbers into perspective:
Dreamcast sold 1.8 million in 1999 (16 weeks)
PlayStation 2 sold 1.1 million in 2000 (9 weeks)
GameCube sold 1.2 million in 2001 (6 weeks)
Xbox sold 1.4 million in 2001 (6 weeks)
Nintendo DS sold 1.22 million in 2004 (6 weeks)
Xbox 360 sold 607,000 in 2005 (6 weeks)
After I added the number of weeks these sales numbers account for, you can see due to shortages, Microsoft likely missed 50% of their customers by not having enough units ready for launch.
Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 worldwide launch last year is having major advantages for European gamers with faster releases. For example, under 4 weeks after the Japanese/American release of Dead or Alive 4, Europeans can play the game starting January 27th.
